MATCHWATCH : Burton Albion (h)

by Sutekh » 29 Dec 2025 21:56

When : Thursday January 1 2026, 3pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Burton Albion arrive in Reading next for another game that subscribers to Sky Sports can watch on the telly just like on Boxing Day .

This is the final club that Reading play in the league for the first time this season and Burton will be extremely difficult opponents as despite again experiencing their habitual struggle at the bottom of the table they are very adept at picking up 3 points in games where you’d say they have absolutely no chance (this season has already seen them collect 3 points at both Cardiff and Bradford) so just turning up is clearly not going to be good enough, Leam & co. will therefore have to have prepared properly and made sure the players are very much in the right frame of mind.

The Brewers are on a run of 2 draws and a win from their last 4 league games so another team that’s been on a bit of a decent run to try and better. One thing that might help Reading though is that Burton are closing in on a winnable FA Cup tie at Boreham Wood therefore there might be a bit of a distraction in some of their player’s minds.

Forwards Jake Beesley and Tyrese Shade provide the majority of Brewer threat with 12 goals between them, they also have the usual ex-Reading connection that seems to surface most weeks in this division, this time it’s George Evans who could prove to be a bit of a pain toward the Reading gameplan.

Hoping that Reading will see the return of Lane and WiFi to the squad to give more options as the transfer window only opens on this day so really zero options for any new arrivals to suddenly appear in time, but they’ll be needed to minimise the management thinking they can implement another Peterborough style game plan.

Reading have played 4 league games at home to Burton and have a record of 2 wins and a draw to show for things so far. It’s also a case of back to the drawing board as both of last season’s match winners against the Brewers (Sam Smith & Chem Campbell) have moved on

We might be 10th currently but insanely we are only 3 points above the relegation places. Any team that goes on a bad run is in big trouble, and we need 4 points minimum i reckon from these next 2 home matches to keep our recent momentum going.

I think Leam needs to make some changes for this, freshen things up and use the squad a bit. I’d like to see Garcia and Fraser start, probably Abrefa as well. If Kelvin is available, him also.

Certainly rode our luck the last few games and haven’t played especially well despite an excellent haul of points in tough games

Also looks like they lost first teamers Tyrese Shade and former Reading youngster Terence Vancooten to injury yesterday, no idea if they'll recover by Thursday.

To Reading’s particular interest there is a 6 point gap now between 8th placed Luton (35 points) and 9th placed Wycombe (29 points)

Reading now sit at a crossroads, they need to switch the engines on and hit a winning run. Games to the end of January are:

Thursday 1st - Burton Albion (h) - 18th - live on Sky+/NOW
Sunday 4th - Stockport County (h) - 4th
Saturday 17th - Leyton Orient (a) - 16th
Saturday 24th - Barnsley (h) - 15th
Tuesday 27th - Exeter City (h) - 20th - live on Red button/NOW
Saturday 31st - Northampton Town (a) - 19th

They foul this bit up then that’s the season done.

Anyone else not had the ticket for this game added to their phone wallet yet, normally updated soon after last game, mine is still showing Luton, dated 1 July 00.00?

Yeah mine is fine so running out of excuses not to go

I don’t think it’ll be a classic tbh. Or Stockport. Then hopefully some signings before Orient

Guessing if Burns and MoM do go back they probably won’t play this one. Don’t think it’ll be our choice

So...

Potentially:
.....................Pereira
Abrefa, O'Connor, Dorsett, Yiadom
.................Wing, Savage
Ritchie..........Doyle...............Kyerewaa
....................Marriott

Subs: Stevens, Garcia, Stickland*, Fraser, Camara, Patton, Spencer

*is he on loan, I forget... maybe Ahmed if so. Or did Kanu come back?

No - Stickland was on the bench the other day. If we have to play him, hopefully he will be better with a more experienced CB with him rather than with Burns as at the start of the season.

Stickland is still here (for now); Kanu at FGR (hopefully he’ll stay there for season, more use than coming to sit on our bench)

Would like to see Garcia start (instead of Ritchie in the above) and Fraser for probably Savage to give him a break

Hopefully KE was just unwell or something but not expecting to see him in the squad

I prefer Ritchie as a sub as you know, and I'd be happy with Garcia on the wing (left rather than right) but I think with Jacob gone and Ryan out, if you're shifting Dorsett into CB, you need Garcia on the bench to cover fullback.

What's the Yellow Card situation? Who's close to a ban and when does it get "reset"?

Think that the Reading players with more than 2 yellow cards so far are as follows.

5

Kyerewaa
Ritchie

4

Ehibhatiomhan
Savage

3

Burns
Williams, D
Yiadom

1 game ban for 5 bookings reached before 19th FL game
2 game ban for 10 bookings reached before 38th FL game
3 game ban for 15 bookings reached before last day of season (before play offs)
Ban would set by relevant regulatory committee for 20 bookings reached before last day of season (before play offs)

Reading are 19th in the L1 fair Play table with 47 yellows and 0 reds. Northampton are top of the table with just 26 yellows and 1 red. Plymouth are bottom of the table on 51 yellows and 3 reds.

Bradford’s Max Power (10 yellows) and Wigan’s Matt Smith (5 yellows and 1 red) are the players at the top of most individual discipline points list

Thanks

I thought Yiadom had lost his knack of not getting booked this season
