Left back Nicky Shorey has signed a new three year contract with Reading Football Club to extend his stay at Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2009.

The left-back, who was voted into last season's PFA's Championship Team of the Season, had one year remaining on his previous deal.

25 year-old Shorey joined the Royals for a nominal fee from Leyton Orient in 2001 and has been a regular ever since.

He has made 218 appearances for the Club, scoring nine goals and creating many more with his deadly accurate left foot.

Director of Football Nick Hammond said, "We are absolutely delighted. Nicky has shown over the past five years that he is an outstanding footballer and he's an important part of our plans for the Premiership.

"We have seen even at international level that quality left-backs are very hard to come by, and we are confident that as Nicky steps into the Premier League, a wider audience will begin to appreciate his talents and he will gain further recognition."

Chairman John Madejski added, "Nicky played an integral role in our rise to the Premiership and we are delighted to agree this contract.

"We have every confidence in his ability to be a big success in the Premiership and believe he is more than capable of performing at the very highest level."

Quality player and I'm glad we've got him on a new contract.

Great news. Now that's the correct attitude to have, I hope you took notice, Mr Sidwell.

And he'll prove the doubters on here, who say he lacks pace, WRONG.

It's a well-known fact that you're not up to Premiership standard defending unless you can run the 100m in less than 10 seconds.

Tremendous news this, anyone else we've got left to tie up? Minus the lost cause of Sidwell obviously.

Great news. He must have failed his medical at Upton Park. Lets hope he doesn't pass the next one in a week or two.

Excellent news..... If Convey wasnt taking the free kicks Shorey would be a bargain in terms of the fantasy leagues....

But the most important element to this is that we're getting most of our best young players on long term contracts - which can only be good news - even if we do get relegated as with a settled side theres more chance of promotion.

Maybe Sidwell will see the light?!

Superb news - I fancy Shorey to be our stand out performer next season and I was keen to see him sign a new deal before the big boys come sniffing which they undoubtably will.

Agreed - potentially our best player in the Prem.... Us boys in the SE corner only get to see him attacking, and he always looks likely to thread a decent cross.

He was RUBBISH in central midfield against Millwall though. So no much chance of him playing there during the season.

Exactly, in many ways this makes his position a but weaker given that all our key players have now been happy to sign extensions to their deals.

all i can say is thank got parrot face donkey robinson got injured..
also thank god for sidwell getting all the attention and deflecting the media away from a player who would grace any premiership team..
unfortunately he is going to get spotted in the next few months...
left backs are golddust... i can see teams of mid prem with money trying to nab him.. like newcastle etc.
