Target Man

by Glen Little's Nose » 11 Nov 2006 17:35

Quite a few papers are suggesting we will buy a 'Target Striker' on January regardless of whether Kits is fit.

But who? I am not up to speed with the European market but I am struggling to find a player in the Premiership or Championship who;

a. We could afford
b. Would have an impact this season
c. Would be available

Alan Smith would do me if he was still available.

Anyone have any thoughts?

1 - Is he a 'target man'?

2 - Could we afford him?

1. No idea really - he is tall (6ft 2 or so) and strong on the ball, so as much of a target man as Kitson I guess.
2. If we can't afford Dave Nugent, we can't afford much at all. £2.5-3 million would do it.

Fair enough. I haven't actually seen much of him, but whenever I hear/read about him he's moving out wide or running at goal and smacking them in. I guess you don't hear too much about the support play. I'll keep an eye out on the Championship on SUnday.

Would Preston even consider selling him if they were in the top two?

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Nugent won't go anywhere unless one of the bigger clubs in the Prem comes in for him, and he won't go cheap.

Is Nugent the best there is in the Championship?

We've still got cash to splash from promotion, I think we can look a little higher then 2.5m-3m, more like 5m. Remember we bidded 5.5m for Lescott and Seol which was turned down.

In terms of forwards (not necessarily target men).

Jerome and McSheffery - Birmingham. However, these two cost £7 million between them in the summer so will go nowhere.

Clinton Morrison is back in the Championship at Palace, but struggling, only 3 goals this season. Jamie Scowcroft at Palace, but a real journeyman, won't really get you goals.

Robbie Blake is scoring goals at Leeds, but he is tiny.

Matt Fryatt looked a great prospect at Walsall, but has stalled a bit, only 9 goals in 30 odd appearances for Leicester.

Dextor Blackstock is promising, only 20, and a 6-footer, currently at QPR.

I suppose that is my point, who is available for say £6m? I am struggling to think of anyone.

Blackstock - No thanks. Also, just joined QPR in the summer after being deemed surplus to requirements at Soton(!)

Fryatt is also too small

Obviously Freddy Eastwood is available in january although havent seen enough of him to say whether he would be good or not.

Please god no one mention trundle.

There are a fair few strikers in the french league that maybe worth looking into who may be interested in coming over to england.

West Brom have a couple obviously nathan ellington, but for me Diomansy Kamara would be a good buy. Good finisher, pacy and is a tall lad who can win balls in the air.

Apart from those already mentioned it is tough to find the right kind of players.

Niklas Bendtner looks a great prospect but whether he can be bought im not sure, though his loan runs out in Jan i think?

Eastwood was mightily impressive against United, and we will need to take a gamble.

As above, he does however live in a caravan.

No way Preston would sell him as they are looking good for an automatic promotion spot with him.

Dave Nugent would be a great signing for about £3m and then in January get Alan Smith on loan for season as he has rejected cardiff and leeds
