Lita's disallowed goal - the case (again) for video analysis

by Millsy » 03 Feb 2007 19:30

Quick comment on the goal first - EXCELLENT work by Hunt.

Again showed why he starts. Runs his socks off - ran for the ball when their defenders gave up. Fantastic header back into the box too.

It's flashes of determination like this that really do change a game and result in goals.

Even if they're wrongly disallowed

So... the old chestnut again: the case for video replay, especially now that we're talking even more millions thatn before. Every point/ decision can literally cost millions.

It would stamp out the Portuguese-style cheating filth which has been creeping more and more into the game.

And would help sort out vital mistakes like the one seen today.

The only conceivable negative (for non-Cheatski fans) are that there'd be too many pauses in the game. However, it would in the longrun cut down on pauses created by unnecessary free kicks etc caused by diving. Furthermoe many cases could be decided in HT - with ref/ linesman decisions adhered to until then eg today's disallowed goal could easily be looked at in HT and given - woudn't matter too much, and wouldn't slow the game down at all.

Lastly, it would lead to an increase in referee/ linesman consistency and performance as it'd make it much easier to assess them objectively.

It's absolutley SHOCKING that in this day and age multimillion pound decisions are made by haphazard split decisions which turn out in many instances to be wrong.

Rant over. Flame me, discuss, whatever.

It's past time for replay.

All goals and offside decisions should be subject to immediate review, and as for concerns about stoppage of play to review foul/freekick decisions, in many (perhaps most) cases it could be done easily as the wall is being set up, position is being jockeyed for and the ref is wagging his fingers at miscreants before the kick is even taken.

So should this be a premiership only thing, because most clubs in the lower leagues certainly couldn't afford it?

Someone needs to crawl out of Hunts backside, anyone would have got to that ball and put it back to Lita. He was very poor going forward today and his football brain is non existant. A runner, not a player.

Jonny Wilkinson was given a try today even though he had his right leg on the ground in touch.

Given by the video referee.

RCFC - good points.

RZR - there are exceptions to every rule: of course mistakes will still be made but they'll be massively reduced. That's the point.

WR - I was thinking the FA could pay for it, or some of the money generated by the TV revenue. And I was thinking perhaps this could be piloted for either a handful of games across all divisions, or piloted within just one division or for a certain cup.

No. It would differentiate the Premier League from all other football in Britain. Sky obviously want it because it would lock the game even more fully into their technology.

If adopted, within a year or two we'd get adverts inserted while the decision was made. Then we'd get decisions deliberately prolonged to fit the ad break. Then we'd get timeouts if there happened to be no controversial decisions. Etc etc etc.

Huntys mix of exhuberance ,tenacity, instinct, graft, dedication, cheek and honesty must be a managers dream.Certainly glad he`s on our side.
Like all our players he`s still on a learning curve at this level.
Amazing the way from a cameo role bit part player Hunty IMHO has grasped his opportunity it will take some prizing the shirt from him.

Even if they could, it would hardly extend all the way down the ladder - it has to stop somewhere. Do what they do in rugby - every team that can afford it does it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but goal line technology wouldn't be that expensive to install/maintain, surely? Compared with weekly salaries etc...

If football is to remain the same game, whether played at Prospect Park or The Madejski Stadium, we cannot accept video refs or replay decisions.

If you have a goal line camera at a premier league ground, there must be the same technology available at the grass roots level of the game.

Clearly, this is not an option and if top flight football were to have different laws, which this would clearly mean, football would no longer be the same game played across the world at every level.

Imagine the outrage of frustrated dads when their little ray of sunshine has his goal disallowed, or the father of a 10 year old raging that you can't allow that offside as there isn't a camera around to prove it was.

All we can do is trust the judgment of the only person on the pitch that does not attempt to deceive or cheat during a game.....the referee.

I have argued for years that 2 more linesmen running the goal lines would be far more practical. They could decide on goal line decisions, but, more importantly, they would be in the perfect position to see the diving/shirt pulling/handling that the referee misses due to his position nearly always meaning that he is behind the play.

It appears that Michel Platini is an advocate of this. It's a solution that can be applied throughout football, at every level. Not just for the benefit of messrs Allardyce, Mourinho and oxf*rd.

Most lower division clubs could not afford it.

It would just be another step to making the Premiership elitist, and before long promotion and relegation would be cut to one or two clubs.

Football has survived for years without it and it isn't needed now.

I don't see how you can consistently argue the football must remain "the same game" at every level and also argue for four linos. Propsect Park games are never, ever going to have four linos.

1. Since when has grass roots cricket had video replays?

2. Football has changed massively with different demands/ pressures and will continue to do so. Why on earth should it "remain the same game"???
Should we use heavy leather balls again and no shin pads? Should tennis rackets be wooden? etc etc

3. Whilst grass roots seems the more intuitive target, actually employing this at the highest level of the game will have the biggest impact, which will filter down to all levels. There'll be less kids emulating the Ronaldos of the world, and they'd appreciate the importance of fair play and know from day one that if they want to be serious abotu football they'll have to give up their cheating/ fouling etc. That's the biggest effect it'll have on the grass roots, and any more would be unnecessary. Just as offside is not implemented when you play in the park as a kid, but is something you learn and mature to as you get more into it,.... so TV replays need not be at the grass roots level.

Agree he has taken his chance and done well and he is part of a winning side and you can't take him out at the moment but some people need a reality check. He was OK today but the way the thread starter talks about him it was as if he was bossing the game and running the whole show.

Little had a much better game than Hunt today. The fact he chased someone is talked of as if he is the only player that works hard. Little chased a ball he had no right to get in the second half, won it from Beasley and we almost scored as a result of it. A nice pass to Lita is talked up as if Hunt was the only player capable of it, the best pass today was Sidwells by a long shot and it hardly got a mention. It seems theres people out there who single Hunt out and praise him regardless of how he's performed. Theres people that have said Hunt was man of the match in the last two games when Lita has won both games with 2 unbelievable performances.

Fair points whch I agree with. Little was immense today as you say... Hunt did balls up a couple of times with needless overhead kicks etc where passes would have lead to goals... Others had a better game than Hunt today for sure but hunt was also good.

But - this thread is (partly) about THAT goal, and in THAT goal Hunt's contribution was great, and a perfect example of how his determination leads to good. I never implied Hunt was "running the whole show." I was certainly more impressed by the likes of Little etc... but for the purposes of this thread that's irrelevant. there are many other threads on here discussing MOTM (see my input on the MOTM thread for example), and team performance etc in which other contributions can be discussed.
