Based on 1st half scores Reading would be 3rd in Table

by flintyboy73 » 06 Feb 2007 22:12

In The Independent they did this table based on first half scores only. here's the top 5

1= Chelsea 51
1= Man Utd 51
3 - Reading 43
4 - Villa 40
5 - Liverpool 38

The rest are
Bolton
Everton
Pompey
Blackburn & Newcastle
Arsenal - 11th!
Wigan
Spurs
Sheff U
Fulham
Man City & Charlton & Middlesborough
Watford
West Ham

It's all a bit silly, but quite interesting.

The table is on football365:
http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/PR/fsthalf.html
(probably where the independent got their info from)

2nd best scorers behind Man U. Shame we aren't so good in the second half! As Coppell would probably say: he doesn't want the highlight of the match to be half-time, you don't win anything at half-time, or some other comment to keep everyones feet firmly cemented to the ground.

We are also joint 4th top scorers in the league with Liverpool. It's a shame we have conceeded so many but this is obviously being addressed with the signings in the window and hopefully a goalkeeper in the summer.

The soccer365 stats page is a good one for this sort of thing:

Half-time table:

http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/PR/fsthalf.html

BTW - It says we have 42 points now.

You got to hand it to West Ham fans. On the other hand, Bolton fans are embarrasing!!

If anyhing it says more positive things about us. Our actual total is only 3 less!!!! That translates to us consistantly hanging onto leads / draws.

Liverpool, Arsenal(especially!?) & Bolton fanny around and leave it late to score whereas we get the job done early doors. Statistically we are most likely to score after 40-45mins.

This has been evident ever since Coppell took over, not just this season.

We have a definate tactic to gain the upper hand early on. The stats prove that very few teams can come from 1-0 down to win.

If you were to look back at all our wins under Coppell, i would say in about 75% of them we were also winning at Half Time.

Federici was great against birmingham, and we have that new icelandic(?) lad we bought in january.

I don't see a need to go all silly with goalkeepers

In the last 4 or so seasons I would be very surprised if we've gone on to fail to win more than 10 games where we've been ahead at half time. It's not that long ago we went almost 2 seasons winning every single game we were ahead at half time in.

If we get our noses in front we've got an excellent chance of winning. We're hard to break down and we're an excellent counter attacking side. Possibly only behind Arsenal in this country at it.

The other 3 we were all square at the break

He isn't going to push Hahnemann though, he will step in this season if he has an injury or if Marcus goes through a very poor run of form. I think a goalkeeper must be our next addition in the summer, Marcus hasn't been anything more than competent this season and we need to stop leaking goals.

if our squad can keep up their form and if our defence and keeper can be improved then we'll be outside title contenders next season.

What about Newcastle?

You both seem to be forgetting that our actual points total also includes games where we have gone on to do better after half time.

"That translates to us consistantly hanging onto leads / draws."

Not borne out by the stats:

Points Lost
Lose When Winning 3
Draw When Winning 2
Points Lost 13
Rank 16

Only Charlton, Newcastle, Sheffield and Wigan are worse.

Those stats are slightly different when you're looking at Half Time/ Full Time though:

Lose when winning at HT: 2 (Newc a, Bla h)
Draw when winning at HT: 1 (Eve a)

Also we have lost twice when drawing at HT (Ast a, ManU a).

So total points lost after HT = 10

On the other hand...

Won when drawing at HT: 3 (Mid h, Wig h, ManC h)

Drawn when losing at HT: 1 (Che a)

So total points gained after HT = 7

I guess you could say it's disappointing to have only gained a point from games we were behind at half time, but actually we've only been losing at HT in 7 games. I think the stats suggest that it's not so much poor 2nd half performances as exceptional 1st half performances - and it's inevitable, given the number of times we have gone into the break ahead, that we would lose one or two of our leads.
