Coppell is set to extend his contract by more than one year

by readingbedding » 15 Mar 2007 13:01

Good news
Good news

Steve Coppell is set to break with tradition and pledge his future to Reading for more than one year.

Royals’ boss – the most successful manager in the club’s 136-year history – is out of contract in the summer.

As we revealed last month, director of football Nicky Hammond had begun negotiations with Coppell in a bid to extend his stay.

Coppell, aged 51, usually prefers to work on one-year contracts, but he could be willing to change that this time around.

Although it would be tempting for him to walk away at the top having delivered unrivalled success for Reading Football Club, the former Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Brentford and Brighton chief looks set to stay to build on Royals’ remarkable first-ever season in the Premiership.

Coppell, who took over in the hotseat from Alan Pardew in October 2003, delivered the Championship title in record style last term.

And his team has again stunned the pundits by pushing for a UEFA Cup spot.

One factor in the boss signing for more than one year is the fact that his three coaches – Kevin Dillon, Wally Downes and Nigel Gibbs – are also out of contract in the summer and can only sign extensions, which run alongside their boss’s.

Coppell insisted his contract situation [b]“was not an issueâ€

Interesting that the coaching staff sign contracts in line with the manager, I thought Dillon would not be included as Coppell's 'man' seeing as he was here before he arrived.

Perhaps it's shrewd work by Mr Mad again. Regardless of whether Dillon is a Coppell man, maybe he wants to create a situation whereby, should Coppell go at the end of a contract, the replacement manager can have a complete clearout at zero expense to the club.

Im sure Dillon was interviewed in the Post about this last season - said he had to tow the line but knew it was a practical thing to do. I sensed an air of disappointment.

If Coppell wants the players to sign for longer than 1 year, then he should aswell.

Good point (nearly well made) probably the reason why he is considering it now

BTW how many Reading players are insisting on one year contracts?

Why? the players wont sign anything that they aren't comfortable with, just because they are happy to sign for longer, doesnt mean coppell has to. i respect coppells decision to stick to one year contracts

Funny isn't it. They make it sound as if Steve Coppell has made a decision, then it turns out to be nothing of the sort - pure unadulterated speculation. Don't believe it till it happens.

Can't beat his recent achievments.

Neither did Fergie for 4 years when he joined Man Utd - what's your point?
