Still the oldest

by 1960 » 30 May 2007 12:30

Reading will continue to be the oldest team in the Prem next year:
Brum 1875 (good try)
Sunderland 1879
Derby 1884.

This did not prevent Derby from being founder members of the Football League, however.

Which clubs are actually older than Reading in the Prem/Football League?

Bar Notts County obviously, since we all know they're ancient.

noise Palace is the oldest league club IIRC. Stoke, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, and Chesterfield are all older than Reading.

That is just so shockingly inaccurate !

http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Crystal ... Palace.htm

"The original Crystal Palace FC was formed in 1861 and took part in the first ever FA Cup competition in 1871. They did not compete after 1876 and it must be assumed that they closed down. There is no connection with the present-day club which was founded in 1905."

Don't Sheff Utd try and claim a very early date of founding on the basis that there was a club called 'Sheffield' , even though the two clubs are different.

And Notts County are older than any of them. 1862.

The Crystal Palace that were formed in 1861 have no connection to the current League club, who started in 1905.

If they do, it's pure garbage, based on the fact that Sheffield F.C. originally played at Bramall Lane. Sheffield are recognised by FIFA as the oldest football club (1857), and they're still going, albeit in the Northern Premier League Division One South.

Didn't FIFA mess up and recognise 2 different teams as the 'oldest' ?

ScottishRoyal and Magnus both Stoke

Except that the Stoke team that were formed in 1863(?) have no connection to the Stoke City team that were formed in 1874, and the original Stoke team no longer exists.

If Cube is around I'm sure he'll correct me on the dates, which I've done from memory.

Suffice it to say that Stoke City are not older than Reading

Skyline I think you are talking about the situation I mistakenly linked to Sheffield / Sheffield Utd.

Cambridge University claim that their football team were formed in 1856. The FA say that Sheffield are the oldest independent club, but might not be the oldest club of any variety. FIFA have stuck with SFC.

Wikipedia mention some facts that wuld seem to cast doubt on whether Sheffield are older than us !

It says that Sheffield played the game to their own code of rules and only adopted the FA rules in 1878.

How can a club that plays by a different set of rules claim to be a 'football club' ?

Surely if they use different rules they are playing a different sport ?

Pulling it all together, the clubs currently in the League that are older than Reading are:-

Notts County (1862)
Nottingham Forest (1865)
Chesterfield (1867)
Sheffield Wednesday (1867)
Rotherham United (1870)

Stoke are disqualified for trying to claim another club's history.
