Our friends in the North

by doyleisaroyal » 18 Jan 2008 12:23

My son found this in our local paper (we live in Warrington now) and we were pleasantly surprised to see a headline with Reading in the sports section in it, then we read it.

Unbelievable, I am lost for words....well I have put down a few, well quite alot actually on his page on the newspaper's website, you have to read it. Oliver Holt's illegitimate 14 year old son I think.

If anyone else wishes to contribute:

or why not drop him a nice little email to

cflanagan@guardiangrp.co.uk

I have!

What's the problem - it's a view that's shared by many people and a LOT of Reading fans themselves.

He looks like a proper tard, though, I'll grant you.

Seems a fair assessment of RFC , could not have put it better myself.

It actually reads as if he's just cut and paste from a few posts on here.

A fairly amusing piece by a 15 year old.

Spotty youth - it is how I imagine Gus TTC to look - his construction of an argument is of similar quality

He makes a good case. I must admit I have mixed views on Reading's approach to the cups and so sympathise with a lot of what he says.

Aim of exercise = get as much attention as you can so you can show the advertisers how many hits you're getting and charge them more.

Job done!

As Platypuss says, this is how many other football fans see us.
If we had taken the opportunity of that European place I think other fans would think very differently about us and we might have remained their second favourite team.
Mind you it doesn't really matter what other fans think-in a few years' time our place will be taken by MK Dons, the ultimate in plasticity (if there is such a word).

He's right though, there is too bigger financial gap between the Premiership and the Championship for any club to risk losing Prem status by going all out on a cup run or Europe. I think we're just unlucky to be a perfect example of the type of middle of the road club that the Premiership breeds. Middlesborough, Fulham and Wigan are other good examples, I think Sunderland and Birmingham will join that group aswell.

I think the original aim of that article may have been to highlight the financial gap, but he seems to get so caught up in having a pop at a rival team that he loses his way more and more with every sentence he writes.

It depends on your mindset of course but i actually think for the most part what we are acheiving says more about glory than fluking a one-off appearence in a cup final.

Everytime our side kicks off and competes against players worth millions more than ours, from clubs worth millions more than ours i think of it as a glorious acheivement. Of course the reality of losing more than you win makes it more difficult to appreciate but in no way dimishes from what we have acheived and continue to acheive.

Rather than ridiculing us perhaps other clubs might want to try and look at how we've managed to do what others can't manage and all on a fraction of their budgets.

Some of our own supporters might want to consider it too.

A pretty damning article and not very well written or researched at all.
Still it seems a lot of supporters think along the same lines if this forum is anything to go by.
