Is it just me or do we go on about the Simod Cup Final?

by Cripple Creek » 03 Apr 2008 09:39

I mean OK it was a bit of silverware but don't we rather overdo it? Or am I just unfaithful (not like Nick Clegg). I do sometimes feel we sound a bit like my late grandfather talking about Hurst's winner circa 1966.

I don't think we go on about it at all.It has only been mentioned recently because it's the 20th Anniversary.

Admittedly Reading's Simod Cup is England's World Cup.

I've never understood why we don't have a chant about it.

"We won it one time
We won it one time
The Simod Cup
We won it one time"

Alan Partridge what else is there to 'go on' about?

The 106 points championship winning side?

Doesn't really lend itself to a song though does it?

"Championes" does not count

I think you have to take it in context.

The Simod cup might be a bit of a laughing matter 20 years on but at the time it was an important revenue stream for most of the top flight in the light of the ban of English clubs from Europe post-Heysel. I seem to remember Chelsea, Blackburn and Forest all winning the thing (in one of the other names it had), so it had some appeal.

I think the death-knell was the formation of the Premier League in 1992/93.

It's still the best day out I've had as a Reading fan.

The day should never be forgotten.

Or maybe English clubs being allowed back into Europe in 1990/91/92.

Agreed-it was the first time EVER that we played at Wembley and it was against a team from the top division putting out it's best side that only a matter of a few weeks later beat the mighty Arsenal at Wembley to win the League Cup.
It's not as if it were a play-off against a team from the same division or a Freight-Rover or Paint game against a team from the same level or lower.
You have to have been around at the time to have felt the David v Goliath nature of the event and it came about after beating other sides of loftier standing along the way.
Successes for RFC have been few and far between -I remember the excitement of winning a football combination competition, can't remember whether it was a cup or league victory at Elm Park v Bournemouth one Spring night in the distant past which shows how little we have had to celebrate other than making it to the FA Cup semi-final in 1927.
Long live the memory of The Simod Cup.

What do you mean "circa 1966". It was precisely 1966. (30th July 1966) Your grandfather is right to go on about Geoff Hurst and the '66 World Cup. I go on about it and I was only knee-high. Can't believe you're comparing the two achievements.

The Simod Cup was a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dire season. So for those who were around at that time,a trip to Wembley sticks in the mind a lot easier then the heartbreak of relegation.

yeah - we go on about it a bit too much, to me it belongs in the Autoglass Windscreens / Zenith Data / Leyland DAF category of short-lived second-rate competitions that don't really warrant attending or remembering. Sorry.
If we'd sat around in League 1 or League 2 for the last 20 years then maybe we should all remember it fondly but we've moved on - I don't think Chelsea are planning a reunion of the Zenith Data Systems trophy winning team from 20 ish years ago.

We do on here, and every other team would of forgotton about it had we not reminded them about it.

As has already been said - it's only getting a mention because it's 20 years since it happened. You wouldn't have found too many threads about it last season.

It was also a remarkable achievement. For a poor team, 2nd last in Division 2, to win that cup, was a massive upset, even without the top 6 from the previous year. You probably have to go back to one of the second division sides winning the FA Cup in the 70s to find a more unlikely cup winner.

Don't think it gets mentioned that much to be honest, and it is still one of our greatest club achievements.

Pissed off it was before my days as a fan. Or rather that I started being a fan well after it.

IMO it doesn't get enough of a mention. What great nights at EP and a truly wonderful day at Wembly.

Brilliant absolutely brilliant.
