We did pretty well to stay up and prevent Wolves going up by beating them. IIRC
We have choked in the past...

95, 01, 04, 05 etc etc

But how many of those are a case of us over performing and not quite making it, rather than failing miserably to achieve what we are capable of?

I'd suggest relatively few in the last 20 years.

SpaceCruiser I really don't think that's entirely true, but in the years between the 1930's and 1985, Reading failed to progress as a club - apparently due to the directors of Reading unwilling to see Reading realise any ambitions of being successful. They spent the majority of those years in the same division, i.e. Division Three (now called League One). So it's not really a history of failure, more like a history of getting nowhere.

I would think they're attributing the history of failure to the recent play-off final defeats to Bolton and Walsall. Plus the two relegations in 1988 and 1998.

What about 1978?

Yes Spacey, what about 1978? Or was that the season that the bottom 17 clubs in division 4 (Reading finished 8th by the way) were relegated to the then new Conference set up?

Ian Royal I'm not sure I can see us getting 2 wins, but I think Fulham may well do.

I see us with (at best) 1 win 1 draw =37
Fulham 2 wins = 36
Brum 1 loss 1 draw = 33
Bolton 2 draws = 35

Just as easily I can see us with only 2 draws which would see us on 35, which puts us down on goal difference. I refuse to see anything worse, though it is obviously a distinct possibility.

The fact of the mater is if we fail to get a single point from our remaining 2 games we are relegated. That is not good.

I think you are over egging Fulham, I think they'll get 4 points. I don't see them winning both games. I can see Bolton winning at the weekend though but don't see them getting anything at a Chelsea side who have a title shot.

We'll get 4 points to my mind, Fulham 4, Brum 3 and Bolton 3 seeing us finish 16th.

My point is, it's not every ten years that we get relegated, so, having been relegated in 1988 and 1998 doesn't mean we'll also be relegated in 2008.

You all seem to be missing one crucial scenario !!
Chelsea lose to Newcastle , so ending their Premiership interest , then qualifying for The Champions League final !!!
All of a sudden Chelsea away doesnt look quite so daunting for Bolton on the final day , does it ?

Perhaps not, but Chelsea are unbeaten at home in 4 years so won't want to surrender that record lightly. As such, I think the best Bolton can hope for on the last day of the season is a draw.

P.S. Fcuk off newbie

Not necessarily so. What if Man Utd also lose, or draw?

At home to West Ham? Do me a favour.

Were. The managers are mates. Ditto with Wigan. Utd can't lose the League.

Thaumagurist* Just checked soccerbase, Wet Sham were at home to Man Utd for the penultimate game in 1995 and Man U needed to win to have a good chance of winning, but Wet Sham, having nothing to play for, held them to a 1-1 draw. The following final game saw them lose to Everton whilst Blackburn, despite losing at Liverpool, ended up winning the championship.

And I'm not sure if Wet Sham repeated the feat some seasons later.

One last thing, Wet Sham beat Man Utd last season to stay up.

So. How many of those were Man U at OT with them having something to play for?

You really are a twat aren't you Spacey

In 1994/95, the West Ham v United game and the Liverpool v Blackburn games were the last games of the season. A blackburn win won them the league, anything else meant United had to win at Upton Park to win the league.

United drew 1-1 at Upton Park despite battering the Hammers for most of the game. Blackburn lost 2-1 at Anfield - the winning goal being a 30 yard screamer of a free kick from Jamie Redknapp. As such, Blackburn won the league by 1 point.

The Everton game you speak of was the FA Cup final - I will quote Soccerbase just for you:

Soccerbase English Premier West Ham 1-1 Man Utd 14-05-1995
English FA Cup Everton 1-0 Man Utd 20-05-1995

How can people keep saying it won't be in our hands?

We are the team with (arguably) the easiest fixtures, we win both we stay up. Regardless what happens elsewhere it should be ours to lose. Spurs season is over, and while they still play well at home, they aint terrific away. Any team that loses to Derby at this point, deserves to go down.

4 points should be enough, and I am confident we will get them.

If we lose it won't be in our hands. If we draw, it still won't be in our hands if both Bolton and Birmingham win.

We are definitely going to score.

We have just gone 5 games without a goal.
Before that we scored in the previous 5 games, and then, before that, we failed to score in the previous 5.

Goes without saying we will start a new scoring streak.

2 games this season and 3 next in the Premier.
