Wolves in 1985

by 1960 » 28 Sep 2008 11:12

Our record-breaking Royals 13-game winning streak was broken by a poor Wolves team, who drew 2-2 at Elm Park in October. Now Wolves are trying to equal/break (I'm not sure which) a club record of eight successive wins. Would it not be just and fitting if we could repay the compliment on Tuesday?

My first game watching Reading(aged 13), I am officially a glory hunter.

I remember Wayne Clark scoring for wolves ? I think we came from behind twice.

I thought we were 1 nil down, 2-1 up - I seem to remember being completely gutted by the equaliser.

Weren't Wolves bottom at the time, or very close to it?

Correct. Wolves scored late on to make it 2-2...my first game that season.....typical.

Legend has it there were 20,000 inside Ep for this one. The official gate was way less, due to Safety Issues post Bradford Fire. Ah, the good old days of fiddled gates.

It was certainly packed out and the official gate was something like 15,000.

They got relegated that season. I don't care how big they claim to be, we've been in the Premiership more recently than them and they've been in the 4th Division more recently than us.

I might be wrong but was Floyd Streete playing for them, and put in a MOTM performance?

Didn't they have a demonstration march in London the following day against their then owners the Bhatti brothers?.

Big team indeed......

I was studying at Wolverhampton Poly at the time and it was front page news on their Express and Star local rag the next day how they derailed the "mighty Reading". Absolutely full of it.

and yes they did get relegated that season
and yes they did lose to Chorley 3-0 around that time
and yes they did get a whole 2,100 through the turnstiles for a home fixture for Bury.

It was a grat atmosphere in EP that night, when super Trev banged in the second I really thought we had done it 14 straight wins. Alas it was not to be, the really sad bit is there is no video of it as the tv companies were not showing league football due to a dispute over money. We did get our revenge at Molinoux 3-2 our presence boosted the gate to a huge 4,000! Big club my arse.

ISTR that the programme for the last game at Elm Park estimated the figure to be in the mid 19,000s.

First time I saw Reading fail to win.

Yes, and a couple of years later they lost to Aldershot in the div 4 play-off final. Ho ho ho!

You are absolutely spot on. FS had an immense game. We were fortunate to come away with a point. The sad thing about that game was that before kickoff, at least 10 coached were going to Bury. In the end, only 3 went. We lost 3-1 with David Crown scoring a consolation.

Was behind the goal for this one - crammed in. Remember us equalising and a copper standing next to my dad and I saying we will go on to win this now - how wrong he was and yet funny how little things stick in your mind.

Got to go the Newport game though which was so special...and as i have said before - there reverse terracing as i called it.

I was just going to say that. A man mountain that night - really stuck in my mind so I was well pleased when he came to us, albeit fleetingly.

I remember that away game. They were 2-0 up but once we pulled one back their lot started leaving. I spoke to a work colleague who is a wolves fan and he said that once we pulled one back then that was the end and that we would win - which we did.

My memory of that night is a story of a friend who was at Uni in Guildford at the time. He has sitting through a lecture when he stood up and started walking out. The lecturer asked where he was going. He replied "Wolverhampton" and carried on walking! It was funny at the time.

No !! We were 2-1 up until that rogue poster Floyd Streete scored the equaliser.

p.s. I've just noticed that I'm a few hours late with that one
