The least I could do is to make one man's wish come true.

Most overrated Reading player ever. Couldn't even head the ball - a real weakness for a centre-forward - he used to leap several weeks before every hopeful punt forward aimed at his bonce. Also wrote a very pretentious column in the Evening Post for a while.

He writes a column up in Scotland now I think.

Still loved Archie and he was brilliant in 1993-5.

Most over rated player? Behave yourself. We've had a lot lot worse.

A lot? Name them.

PS. Just to help you out here Jay, anyone from the long list of average or worse players that weren’t held in great affection by either the majority of Elm Park (or Madejski) fans doesn’t count.

I agree with you in what you're saying but Lovell was good for a few seasons, my nomination would be a fairly recent player Sammy Igoe. One good game in 10, a couple of good goals in about 3 seasons, flattered to decieve and was loved by loads.

Worse players doesn't mean over-rated - it's all about the difference between the reality and the common view of how good they were.

But for the record I'd say that Rougier, Mass Saar and Omar Daley were all talked about as great players, and all delivered far, far less than was promised and expected.

Have to agree with Floyd, always thought Archie was very over rated, but never voiced those opinions as he always seemed to be the Southbank darling.

Saying that, Archie was responsible for 2 of my favourite ever Elm Park days, his hat trick against Swindon on a very warm April day making McMahon look a right mug for his 3rd and of course his brace against the FSB beating them 2-1 and basically screwing up their promotion chances. I celebrated his equaliser so much, that I was too cream crackered to jump around for his second, so looked across the park to the away bench to see FSB with his head in his hands....a glorious sight.

This is the first time I have seen anything of that game since the day. I think everybody liked Archie but nobody thought he was particularly good. If we could have paired Nogan with Forster at the time that would have been some stike force.
The mispronounciation is typical David Pleat but people should realise that this man really is the font of football wisdom. I have followed Pleaty`s enlightening analysis since his days down the Seven Sisters Road and this enables me to make the occasional erudite observation on Hob Nob...........
strictly on football matters of course.

Who actually said Lovell was a really great player though? He was certainly popular, but I don't recall many thinking a career in the premier league was likely for him.

Oh yes... now that was one of the greatest days on the South Bank. I think I ended up up about 30 rows forward, nowhere near my mates, and all this after just telling the Wolves fans where to get off just seconds earlier after the equaliser.

Ahh... happy days... we used to win quite a bit at home then, y' know. No, honestly we did - and at home too.
