He left having given us our best ever years - if he failed to work wonders if he came back, his reputation with us would be tarnished - I'd rather remember him for all the good times, rather than us possibly struggle this season, even under him.

Yeah, I'd take that in all honesty.strap His record with Palace when he went back was rarely the same as his first stint, however, you miss the point. His return would only be as a temporary measure, probably unil teh end of the season. His brief would be simple - keep us up!
In that regard, he would steady the ship, get the team in some semblance of order and balance, and then hand over to someone else in hte summer.
I have always said that if you have a young inexperienced team you need an old head as manager. SSC would provide just such a leader. For a short term fix, SSC would be ideal.
