Despite the shocking start...

by T.R.O.L.I. » 02 May 2010 18:29

...this was still the equal 8th best season in Reading FC's history:

1st - 8th in Tier 1 - 2006/07
2nd - 18th in Tier 1 - 2007/08
3rd - 1st in Tier 2 - 2005/06
4th - 2nd in Tier 2 - 1994/95
5th - 4th in Tier 2 - 2002 / 03 & 2008/09
7th - 7th in Tier 2 - 2004 / 05
8th - 9th in Tier 2 - 2003/04 & 2009 / 10

Roll on the weekend of the 7th / 8th August!!!

I suppose thanks for this should go to Rodgers. Had it not been for his ineptitude, this season could have been quite dull!

Ideal As soon as we got rid of Rodgers we were flying.

Not quite. It was not until we defeated the bin dippers that we all of a sudden started to see the performances improve.

Mr Mad will probably be more interested in the fact that it was the fifth best season in terms of average league attendances.

If McD is allowed to keep this squad together for next year, and we start as we finished this, there's no reason why we can't break the 20k average next year.

Its amazing to see that to get to the play-offs alone it took 20 wins and 11 draws from the 46 games played, we finished with 17 wins and 12 draws and 12+3 of those have come since the turn of the year. Just where the hell would we have been with just a slightly better start to the season................if nothing else this is why we have to do as much as possible to keep holds of the nucleus of this side, in particular Sigs, Mills Kebe, McAnuff and Feds add to that sorting deals for at least two of the three defensive loanees and next year would be very exciting.

There is an argument for a 20 goal a year striker, of course, but it has to be remembered that we have been without, probably, our most instictive scorer in Noel Hunt, I have no doubts he would have scored a hatfull with the service that Kebe, McAnuff, Sigs, Howard and Tabb have put on a plate since christmas.

Most of us predicted or hoped for a mid-table finish. From that point we as a club achieved that aim despite some shocking play, results and the Rogers era.
The cup run turned out to be that catalyst needed, which is a complete turn around in priorities from previous seasons.

and like it or not, Rodgers has been part of our success this season..........the loan signing of Bertrand, the signing of Howard, McDuff and the starting berths for Sig and the likes, helped form the team that we would all like to see next season.

Nothing came off for Rodgers, but MaccyD turned bad luck into good.

A great end to what turned out to be a great season

Cheers to both managers

Well he was certainly an ingredient, and therefore part of the success and failures of this season.

Agreed that Rogers bought in certain players that have proven themselves.

It was down to more than just luck, but I'd say you're at least 75% right.

There's an argument that 2nd (95) and 4th (03/09) in tier 2 are equal as they are both finishing 24th overall iirc.
I count it that way anyway.

Depends on your definition of "best" really.

If you think it's how high you finish up the league then fair enough, but I reckon winning the Div 2 championship for example is >> finishing 9th in Div 1 or, dare I say it, getting spanked every week in the Prem

Best in terms of final ranking over the 92 league clubs.

Just shows how our fortunes have changed with the new stadium, surely not a coincidence. Maybe on the back of our fifth best ever supported season we should be looking to increase the capacity of the stadium so we are better prepared for when we next make it to the Premier League? Just a thought.

What is also remarkable is that we finished around 5th highest scorers in the league (sorry might be slightly out as not got table in front of me) - we hardly scored a home goal until later November and I am sure we were lowest home league scorers well into the autumn.

Well the chap who has worn the nr 14 shirt since Christmas has certainly played a damn sight better than the Cummings wannabee who had the shirt for the previous 2 years. Even the new model is prone to too many bouts of complete and utter shite - but at least those instances are now pretty much equally interspresed with episodes of brilliance. One can now laugh at the dross and praise the sublime.

I will be totally converted if he gives us a full season next year of the stuff he's given us since Christmas. "20 goal man Kebe" - now there's a phrase I thought I'd never see in print! Actually I'd be happy with just 10 next seaosn TBF.
