TOTMFP

Well, there were four beer fests in four days, but I took a practical view on events (i.e. the missus said she wasn't drIving to any more bloody beer festivals after the first two, so we went for a long walk in the country on BH Monday instead...

Well, where to start with the beeropolis that is Derby? The afore-mentioned Brunswick and Alex next door are close to the station, welcoming to away fans and the ground can be reached by the footpath down the steps opposite. For those that have a bit of time to explore, there is the Smithfield on the riverside close to the bus station, which, in turn, is very close to the Derby Pub of the Year, The Exeter Arms, where the beer is superb and the scran is, well, top. Within a few hundred yards of there can be found the Peacock at the top of Nottingham Road and slightly further on, the Furnace with around 10 real ales and an on-site microbrewery winning multiple awards at the moment.

All those mentioned above are within a mile of the ground and will have absolutely no problem at all with away fans, so fill yer boots.

The Waterfall is a bit meh for me, but the Station is superb for Bass by the jug - if you can get in, they're a bit funny with admittance at the best of times, never mind on matchdays.

Top man, cheers 3vs. I'm getting up there at stupid o'clock so hoping to tick off a few of them.

Like the sound of the Exeter and the Furnace.

We're coming in from Ashbourne on the midday bus, so will probably pitch up at the Exeter around 1245...

I've always gone to the Navigation, parked on the street and walked up to the ground.

They serve pretty decent Pedigree at the ground.

Just got 3 tickets. Unusual that they let me book three under just the one season ticket - is that because they are on general sale?

If you plan to travel from Reading to Derby by train, a couple of bits of advice for you:

1) Split your ticketing at Banbury and Coventry to get the cheapest fares.
Split Fares - Off-Peak Journeys
From To Price Ticket Type Restrictions
1. Reading Banbury £11.20 Off Peak Day Return Not Via London
2. Banbury Coventry £12.50 Anytime Day Return Any Permitted Route
3. Coventry Derby £16.00 Off Peak Day Return Any Permitted Route
Total Split Price £39.70

This compares with lowest price of £50.50p when trying to book advance fares.

Info from http://www.splityourticket.co.uk/

2) Be aware that some of the Cross Country trains are not serving Reading station in the morning, but are serving Reading West instead. So you can either get on at Reading West, or get on an earlier First Great Western service to Oxford and change there.

Finally, for fans of railways and real ale, the Alex by the station has the cab of 37411 in the back garden!

Further to UWG's advice, check megatrain.com

I got a return from London for £12. Those heading from Reading may be able to change onto the East Midlands Line part way then buy a seperate megatrain for the rest (or just go via London)

It says a lot for the quality of pubs in Derby that the Brunswick can't even get into the GBG nowadays.
