When you factor in things such as the need to close the lines for part of the time whilst the platforms are built (forcing all trains onto another route + bus replacement services), you very quickly clock up into the £100ks is compensation to the train operators alone, before you even look at the construction costs. (You cannot build a platform next to a live railway line - you need to close it for at least part of the cosntruction period).
Then add in the need to make your station fully accessible for disabled passengers (so you need lifts and / or very large and long pedestrian ramps), and your bill starts rocketing upwards very quickly.
It is a shame this project is dead, but no surprise in the current financial climate. It was tagged on the back of new housing proposals, and without the new housing there is nothing to trigger the expenditure on a new station.
