Record Attendance today?

by Glen Little's Nose » 10 Feb 2007 16:36

Was I right in seeing 24,112 on the screen today.

Is that our record attendance?

There were loads of empty seats dotted around, so presumably this attendance is seats sold rather than people through the turnstiles.

I thought there were a lot of empty seats today. (Looked quite full in the away section). Strange that it should be a record attendance. Do they count all the STHs whether they show up or not?

edit/ just noticed I'd been Dodded by a few seconds

Couldn't believe it when they announced the crowd. Were there really more people there today than against Manchester United and Chelsea? The fair number of empty seats would suggest otherwise.

Maybe the empty seats were from where the stewards were 'quietly removing' the away supporters who posed a disgraceful safety hazard by standing throughout the game!

Unfortunately my seat was one of the empty ones due to my road being impassable still this morning.

Looks like the attendance number is definitely not the number of people who attend the game

Looking again at match footage from the Villa game there are hundreds of empty seats. Anyone know how they come up with the "Attendance" figure?

"Attendance" and "tickets sold" are obviously always two different things. The club can state we've sold out for this game, but surely they only count clicks through the turnstiles as official attendance? You don't "attend" anything just by buying the ticket...Of course some may pass other tickets through the readers if the holder can't attend, assuming they want to keep their points up, but that seems a lot of bother for people who have to be organised enough to get their ticket to a mate who can do that for them.
Does the capacity include all hospitality seats as well as staff seats etc, though? Not sure how they are counted...

Have to say the figure did look a little optimistic on Saturday as that would have meant just 78 empty seats in the whole stadium?? We had four directly next to us where a STH family normally sits...they were empty for the whole game, but you would never get all 24122 sitting in their seats at any given moment, so looks could be deceiving...

Weirdly, they decide to count the number of people coming through the turnstiles, rather than the foolproof method of looking on the tv and guessing...

In a crowd of 24,000 people, if only 1% are getting a coffee/going to the loo/being escorted out by the stewards for supporting the team, then you've soon got a few hundred empty seats.

On the other hand, if the club are playing things by the book in terms of VAT etc. they would need to keep a record of tickets sold, so maybe that is the figure they use for attendances.

Eeven allowing for the factors WHWU mentions, to me the stadium on Saturday looked to have less people in it than at other matches, which have had lower declared attendances.

I was at the match and noticed there were more empty seats throughout the game than I have seen at any other Prem game this season. Very strange that it was a record attendance. I really don't think it can have been the number of people through the turnstiles that was used. Maybe I'll call RFC later today and ask... :?

Believe the club do it on a tickets sold basis....

By the way the Villa fans stood throughout the whole game I believe.

Also see the Villa fans gave the attendance the usual sarcastic response - and they'd quite entitled to as they obviously have a sell out for all their home games

Whatever method they use to arrive at the official attendance figure, there is no way that there were 24,112 people in the stadium today.

The most disappointing thing about that is not that the club have some strange way of calculating this figure, but that there a significant amount of fans that didn't bother to show up.

In fact I'm struggling to think of a home game this season where I haven't seen a number of empty seats. I often notice this on the TV -when you see a goal at the North Stand end, there are often more empty seats than compared to other apparenlty 'sold out' grounds (Brammell Lane, Old Trafford, Anfield, WHL, Goodison, Upton Park immediately spring to mind).
