Sanguine That's the crux of it - everyone plays crap teams, and in the last 20 years there have been more competitive games (i.e. in competition, not necessarily against great opponents) than ever before. Gary Lineker's 49 England goals stood as a record for a long time - it included 25 goals in friendlies, and his total included 4 against Malaysia and 6 against Turkey (when they were shite). That's not to denigrate Lineker's record, but it's the nature of international football that goalscorers score goals against sub-standard teams.

I think you might be confusing two different records.
Lineker has the competitive record (I think), but only(!!) scored 48 goals in total

Lineker's record for goals in competitive fixtures was eclipsed some time ago by Rooney, and since by Kane.

In which case, I’m now really confused by your statement about Lineker’s record in your post above
He never had the overall goalscoring record, that was (Sir) Bobby Charlton with 49

Sorry, I’m just confused

For some reason I had Lineker at 49 goals with Charlton, rather than one behind. That's it. The rest of the post about the make-up of his goals, stands as posted back in March 2021.

I wasn’t having a pop.
I was trying (clearly badly) to politely and gently point out that the records bit wasn’t quite right.

Germany V England later. Hopefully we put in more of a shift than against Hungary, it was a really dismal performance. Have a little sympathy with all the players in this international window, must be hard to get up for these fixtures.

I've believed for a while that the England midfield duo would be Rice and Bellingham, but JB did himself no favours at all against Hungary (did you mean Hungary rather than Ukraine). That's the worst I've seen him play and I've watched a fair few Bundesliga performances

Pickford needs to do better there.

This is woeful. We are so off the pace and lethargic. Kane in particular needs a rest, give him the rest of this match and Saturday off.

Also I think the "Harry Maguire has never let England down" argument can go away now. He's been shite in the last two games.

I wouldn’t blame Pickford it was just too powerful for him.

Seems incapable of even kicking a ball tonight.
Just made a decent save though.

Good that they've decided to lower our expectations before the world cup finals.

Kane with a great chance to equalise.

Grealish should start games imo, does a lot more than Saka.

He does better as an impact sub for England when defenders are more tired. We really need Foden to be fit for the whole finals.
