Women's World Cup 2023

by Pepe the Horseman » 17 Jul 2023 16:02

Couldn't see a thread for this, but 1000 apologies if I've missed it.

Kicks off on Thursday morning with New Zealand v Norway. Our first game is v Haiti on Saturday, followed by Denmark on Friday 28, and China on August 1.

US are clear favs, followed by England and Spain. Philippines are likely to be the whipping girls.

My girl to watch is Keira Walsh. Thought she was incredible in the Euros and didn't get the credit she deserved. Will be backing her for player of the tournament if there is one...

England's injuries have hampered chances significantly, especially Williamson who will be a huge miss - truly exceptional at the Euros. Will watch a few games, but not the group stages much as there are some proper whipping teams in there. Real business starts in the knock outs.

Can`t see any evening highlight programmes, seems odd when most people are either sleeping or at work when the live games are on.

Found this for ya

Once the World Cup kicks-off, highlights from all 64 World Cup games will air in regular shows on BBC Three and BBC Two.

Wins for the hosts in the openers. NZ with a shock 1-0 win over Norway, and Australia needed a pen to get past Ireland, albeit without Sam Kerr, as ya man pointed out.

I watched the first half of Australia against Ireland. It was dire.

Only interesting when it's the last 8.....the gap between some of these teams is going to be embarrassing.

Apparently FIFA are having to give away free tickets as no-one wants to pay to watch the games.

The early kickoff times are really going to open the door to my morning drinking during the August school holidays.

Pathetic from England. 53rd ranked team could easily of won. Reminds me of England's men in the early 00's.....Beckham, Gerrard and co stinking tournaments out. All that money invested and they produce this against the Western hemispheres poorest country.

Good luck but maybe the first test for woman’s soccer popularity outside of the convenience of America or Europe time zones.

Seen some amusing social media comments from flag shagging Septics about the USA team not singing along to the national anthem, comments like "If you don't want to respect your country, move to North Korea"

Oh, so you mean move to a country where you'd be forced to sing the national anthem.

I thought the England v Haiti game was of a very good standard.

Bit of rustiness for sure, final ball not great and all that, but the movement, 1st touch and passing was generally very good from both teams. (Millie Bright needed to wobble her head a bit after some passes but defensively she was solid.)

A promising start to the tournament for the Lionesses.

And Haiti are way better than 53rd.

The speed of improvement in the Women's game shows no sign of slowing down, which is great.

That said, it's the only game I've watched so far. :D
