Messi 3 goals from breaking Pele's record of 75 goals in a calendar year - add in around 30 assists, and a record 50 La Liga goals in 11/12, and can this award be at all in doubt except for the question 'can we really give it to him again?'

:| That's when they both come up against each other so if you accept that it's a two horse race then it should be taken into account.

Wayne Rooney! Surely to be the FIFA player of the year you need to have played well at international level as well as at club level. It is arguable whether he deserves that rating for his club play, but as far as England is concerned he has not been at the Ballon d'Or standard at all.

Rubbish when I played for Woodley hammers under 11's we had a player who scored over 80 goals in a season. At least a hat trick in every game.
