Have any of you seen footage of Sir Bobby's time? He was up against defending that bad that I'd put even my chances at scoring 49 international goals as pretty high

Rooney has been consistently there for England, ok he's not fared fantastically at tournaments, but he's lead the line well and been part of 3-4 different England 'generations' as the one real constant

He's scored great goals along the way, I'll always remember being there in 2007 when Owen flickedit on ( ) for him to volley home away in Russia

Seeing his brace at Celtic Park last November was special too, his jubilant celebrations full of the sort of passion England 'fans' are quick to doubt

Congratulations Wayne Rooney, England's best ever striker

No Kes-o but the headline stat is fairly conclusive.

I think the answer would have been Michael Owen, under different circumstances, but injuries curtailed his chances.

Hopefully Rooney will notch a few in the Euros and put the doubters to bed. As has been mentioned, his performances at tournaments do follow him around like a little cloud of gloom.

No Fixed Abode The question was "England's best striker". Not England's best player.

OK, so last week Charlton was the better striker but this week it's Rooney?

It's subjective so the only way you can judge it is by stats.

But why the stat of total goals instead of goals per game?

Or the stat of total goals instead of, say, total goals in competitive games? Or total goals in major tournaments?

I think Lineker's 10 goals over 2 world cups, including the golden boot, and his excellent ratio, make him the best goalscorer of my lifetime.

He wasn't the all-round player Rooney is though, that has to count for something.

Exactly, it is subjective, so it can't be judged by the stats otherwise that would be objective.

So what is your opinion on who's been the best forward/attacker/goalscorer/striker*?

* choose which descriptive noun you prefer to answer.

Owen should have been better, but got injured and slow.
Rooney should have been better but his all round skills means he gets played in midfield and dragged wide too much and he has come nowhere near to fulfilling his potential.
I went for Lineker, because he did it in two world cups for us, and as a striker had no weak points.
Shearer was always a little disappointing.

Geof Hurst deserves to be on that list for his World Cup winning hat-trick if nothing else, that in itself is 3x more World Cup goals than Rooney.

I'm not sure Lineker was anything more than a goalscorer whereas other strikers have more to their game, Having said that scoring goals is the important part of being a striker.

Yep so the only conclusive proof there is who has the most goals. You can't argue with that.

I'm not asking for conclusive proof Kes, I'm asking for your opinion on which player you think is better.

So going by that logic, you're saying John Terry is a better striker than Diego Costa, for Chelsea?

But 'better player' isn't the topic subject. It's 'England's best striker'.

I'm not saying Bobby Charlton was a striker or the best striker.

I'm saying Wayne Rooney is the best striker. :|

No Fixed Abode Quite clearly it's Rooney. He's scored more goals than any other England player.

Stats don't lie.

It doesn't but you're saying whoever has scored the most goals is the best striker......when in fact that just makes them better at scoring goals.
