Heard an interesting take on why the English youngsters don't seem to progress.

View expressed was that our Academies are fantastic up to the age of 16 but then, those who are offered contracts go onto silly money, and lose that incentive and desire for mentor ship that has brought them through the system from the age of 8 or 9.

Example given was of a young 18 yo player who was earning £400k pa, nowhere near the 1st team of his PL club and never going to get there in a million years but was able to go down to Nandos every night and treat his mates - at16 yo he had it all before him but his education stopped when he got his contract - nobody worked on his brain thereafter. It was just football football football.

He stalled in his progression because he was no longer being taught about the real stuff involved in making it as a top player... That bit is all in the head, and no-one was getting inside it anymore.

Too many young players have their development stunted by the money and the lack of education after they've signed that 1st contract.

The Irish, Welsh, Icelandic players are almost to a man, inferior technically to every one of the English players but they know how to play as a Team, because that is in their brains. Our most talented players burst onto the scene, show huge flair and then don't develop their talent because they are individuals, and not really able to think and play as just one cog in a wheel that only works if all parts are synchronised.

Sterling has gone down that route, Alli will follow and there are many many others who have never got close to fulfilling the potential they showed as teenagers.

Is kind of the gist of it....

Makes total sense, they're just too mollycoddled as well as set for life at far too early an age.

How is this different to the majority of footballing nations (I don't know the answer btw)

The reply you'll always get...in the last 50 years it was different yet the output was largely the same

Another story, in a similar vein - worked with someone who had played on the same academy team as a subsequent Chelsea recruit at 17 years old. He was earning close to £200k pa on his first professional contract, signing which earned him £20k. When he was loaned out to the lower leagues, he received another similar-sized 'signing on' fee - yep, a bonus for signing a loan deal - and he earned £5k for every goal he scored. He also earned bonuses when Chelsea won titles and cups.

He owned a house and a Merc aged 18, before he had played 10 times in the football league. He never played for Chelsea, and is now treading the usual steps around the lower leagues.

How can we expect young players to have any hunger for the game when they have everything they want before they have even made a name for themselves?

I love the American scholarship system, but I know it just isn't applicable here.

..

Most Welsh players would have been bought up in English academies and gone the exact same route as English players

The majority of them haven't gone straight into Premier League teams though, they've made their way up with or from clubs in the Championship or lower leagues so they've not had the big contracts, hype, over exposure and mollycoddling of the likes Rooney, Wilshire and Sterling.

There's an element of truth to that yes!

A lot of it is just down to expectations but by the same token there must be reasons why we consistently don't perform to a better standard.

I doubt that very much.

He played 13 games for Chelsea in the PL last season and has just signed a 5 year deal.

Might have been referring to his old contract though: http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/ruben-loftus-cheeks-17m-year-17-1793105

So how would it go over having another Italian as your nation's new footballing Overlord? :D

He does know the English players, and footballing sensibilities there, having coached there before.

I'd be happy with that.

This made me laugh: "Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard have also been asked for their views on the side’s recent failings at major tournaments."

Shouldn't they just answer, "Because we played absolutely oxf*rd shit for England?"

1. Primarily we failed as the manager and his team appeared to be totally clueless and leaderless
2. We carry on failing because the FA make it so difficult and expensive to become a coach
3. And all is compounded by too many foreign players cluttering up PL teams and all teams having squads that are too big
4. Also it doesn't help that after every failure the FA ask the same questions get told the same things and then do naff all or just tinker about a bit.
5. Drop the stupid approach that "we're building a team that'll be able to reach the WC semi finals in 4/8 years". It's utterly ridiculous and just sets up the frame of mind that failure is acceptable rather than rising to the challenge and doing your damn best to achieve.
6. Appoint a manager who is is own man and wouldn't be afraid to use players from the Championship or lower in building a TEAM

If the papers are to be believed there was some money to be made on the early England manager markets - Allardyce and Klinsmann emerging as the favourites. :|

Those clamouring for Hoddle to return have clearly not been watching ITV's coverage of the Euros. His co-commentary has been utterly abysmal.

And, as for Big Sam:

And, as for Big Sam:

Hoddle went from sounding really clued up and knowledgeable to utterly out of touch and bewildered and back again frequently.

I don't get why people keep calling for him. Yeah he did quite well for a while, but he hasn't had a management job for a decade and he had some mentalist tendencies.

It's like Reading fans wanting Curbishley as manager. The boat sailed on him being a decent option years ago. He's out of the game, get over it.
