Magnus To moan about that goal is to forget that we got beat by 3 clear goals.

Had that goal been awarded then we would have played a different game and Germany would not have been able to counter attack like they did.

Fuck me, just noticed that.

That's seriously sad.

But as you have so eloquently proved with your frimmers like moving of the goalposts its even sadder that it is true[/quote]

So that would be moving the goalposts from saying:

'England have been on the wrong end of the worst two decisions in world cup history' to:

'England have been on the wrong end of the worst two decisions in world cup history'

Is it or is it not a closer decision than Lampard's? If it is (and it clearly is) then it is not a worse decision than Lampard's.

I didn't say it was worse. I said it's not still being debated today, which was your claim.

Maybe if they didn't try to throw the kitchen sink with 25 minutes to go then they wouldn't have been a victim of the counter attack but that would be asking them to think which they haven't done all world cup

Tbf it wasn't so much 'throwing the kitchen sink' that led to us short of numbers for the 3rd goal, but John Terry dicking about on the edge of the German area when he should have been tracking back.

The TOUGH LOVE from all of this is, is that we are not good enough. And we won't be for some time until the whole english system is upturned.

There was a time when I thought England would win every tournament they took part in. That time was called my youth. Now I see it for what they are; players who wouldn't be so hero worshipped if only for the fact that we have a league that which; only ever serves the mediocre. A league which average european players look at as the gravy train that they have to jump on 2 season away from retirement. An easy ride where thir ageing legs wont get shown up because they are playing against some south american youngster who no club outside these isles would pay anywhre near the same cash for. And then we see our lads play aginst these money boys or has=bens and we get over excited each and every f*cking tournament!!!

Don't feel bad! I used to be the same. Just +1 this and resign yourself to the fact that the reason Premiership Football is so successful, will forever mean that out National team will forever fail.

It would have made it a different game, because England would have thrown fewer players forward with the scores level. They still would have lost, but with a different score and in a different way.

sandman The England players will never be able to play for their country the way they do for their clubs because they do not play with the same quality of players.

Never a truer word spoken! This is what the FA should be looking at!

We're just not good enough

While most people don't tend to pay too much attention to the FIFA rankings, they're not a bad guide, and based on the last 4 or 5 years, our ranking of 8th is about right. We're better than most, but when we come up against some real quality we get found out.

There's no disgrace in that (most nations would love to be that good on a fairly consistent basis), I just wish people would accept that situation rather than go all jingoistic with the "we're England, we've got a divine right to win the world cup" and "only an Englishman can get the best out of the players because only he would be able to inject passion into the players" crap.

Yes, we've got a domestic league to rival most others, but that's because people have spunked obscene amounts of money on importing the best players from abroad, rather than generating our own world-class crop of youngsters. That's why France, as hiliariously awful as they've been recently, will bounce back - they have the infrastructure on a national basis and the clubs and national association pull in the same direction for the country's footballing future. In this country, there are so many different groups involved, each with their own self-interest at the forefront of their thinking that we will never, ever, produce enough quality players on a consistent basis to be a genuine world force.

And in the cold light of day, having the best league in the world week in week out is better than having a dire domestic league and a more successful national team.

Not for me, its not. And its that antipathy thay has us in this mess.

I'm a Reading fan anyway. The Premiership means nothing to me other than a group of over paid c*nts who will let us down every two years or so.

But, in what way is the Premier League the best league in the world? We know that next season either Chelsea or Man Utd will win it. And we know that Blackpool, West Brom and, probably, Newcastle will be relegated.

England were cut to ribbons, by-passed and pedestrian in midfield and impotent in attack. Gareth Barry was particularly bad, how slow is that bloke.

Capello has had a right mare since looking like world beaters at the end of qualification. Friendlies have been woeful, limited tactics, unwillingness to change formation, picking Rob Green, bringing in Carragher, taking Ledley King, dropping Walcott, asking Scholes to come back in, not playing Joe Cole, persisting with Heskey (bringing him on today was shambolic) and the list goes on and on.

Gutted we are out, but genuinely can look forward to the remaining games without getting stressed, nervous before the game and not enjoying my BBQ food. Go Ghana!!

If its wrong, it's wrong.

I haven't got the answers. Just, for the first time in my life, the World Cup didn't ignite that horible feeling within me. That feeling that makes you think that this is, at last, our time.

I missed that feeling. i went looking for it and delved deep to find it, but, ultimately, it wasn't there.

And for that reason my furniture remains un-upturned today, although my heart feels a little lighter for it, and i'm not stood on my own looking for the reasons we didn't qualify because i know all to well already what they were.

S'right. As evidenced by the fact that we never qualified at all in 1974 and 1978 and didn't have to qualify in 1970 as we were the holders or 1966 as we were the hosts.
