^^ This

Rooney will again set the Euros alight with his skill just as he has done since 2004...

I'm surprisingly neutral for this match - given my Anglo-Eastern European ancestry I'd have thought I'd have stronger feelings for one side than the other

I suppose I scrape a pass on the Tebbitt test (or at least a re-sit)

I'd suggest it's your mixed Anglo-Eastern European ancestry that's causing your neutrality :|

It's a lot more straightforward when you're only Anglo

TBM Why the confused face?

He did

It's at the what I thought was a sarcastic comment about his performances at the Euros since, when he hasn't played in one since 04

I don't see the reason for so much pessimism. I think England will win tonight and I can imagine that Rooney will also have a positive impact. That it's not a must-win situation will also work in his favour as he will not be trying too hard to make an impression from the outset. What is more interesting is how he will fare in the Q-F against Spain or Italy. But who knows - maybe then he will offer us an international-career-defining-game. There is one due.

England 2 Ukraine 0
France 2 Sweden 1

My predictions are generally wrong, of course.

Interesting that Hodgson seems perfectly happy to big up Rooney rather than ask for caution as he did with Wellbeck. Obviously there's a big difference in exprince but previous England managers have all been very careful to manage expectations where Rooney is concerned. Looks like Hodgson is effectively telling him "you're our best player, now go and show you're one of the very best in Europe as well"

Shows an attention to individual man management at odds with the rather lazy "defensively organised bore" tag that the tabloids have labelled him with.

Time will tell how it works but I've a sneaky feeling that Rooney will respond positively.
