Vision Interesting that Hodgson seems perfectly happy to big up Rooney rather than ask for caution as he did with Wellbeck. Obviously there's a big difference in exprince but previous England managers have all been very careful to manage expectations where Rooney is concerned. Looks like Hodgson is effectively telling him "you're our best player, now go and show you're one of the very best in Europe as well"

Shows an attention to individual man management at odds with the rather lazy "defensively organised bore" tag that the tabloids have labelled him with.

Time will tell how it works but I've a sneaky feeling that Rooney will respond positively.

I seem to remember the hype surrounding Rooney in 2004 (where he played well until he broke his metatarsal) and 2006 (where he had a metatarsal injury leading up to the tournament) was incredible. It seemed like he was the man who could win us a tournament. Seems a bit more sensible this time round - general recognition that he's our best player but tempered with a streak of realism, not least because he was gash in WC 2010.

I think Hodgson is right to back him so strongly, should give him a bit of confidence.

So what outcomes do we need to win the group?

Simply to have more points or a bigger goal difference than France, I would have thought.

We need to win and France not win. Or, if France do win, we need to win by enough margin to have a better GD than them.

Need to beat Ukraine by 1 goal more than France beat Sweden, I think (to go top).

Do we want to win the group?

Win and get Italy followed by Germany or Greece
or
Runner up gets Spain followed by Portugal or Czech Republic

Think I might prefer to come second from what I've seen Spain so far.

Good point. Each game at a time, but it would be good to avoid the ladder with the Germans on it. Sick to death of losing to those bastards and their cushy ref mates.

We just need to qualify tbh. Every time I've looked at a potential route to a final before it hasn't panned out that way plus we've been knocked out :x

'greed with anyone who said "just win and qualify", we'll cross the bridge of who we have to play next at the weekend (ideally on Saturday)

Walcott is better with half hour to go, Milner will do the donkey work and when they're tired Walcott will hit them with his pace

What a fecker...
Runner up and go out knowing if we'd have just sneaked something we'd have had a great chance of making the final.
Or Win the group and have an ok chance of getting to a semi-final where we then get battered.

I'm not denying that Spain or Germany are better teams than us but they're not so much better that I think it would be anything other than a two-horse race.

Think back to 2010. If we'd won that group - either through the USA not getting that late goal against Algeria or us actually doing what we were supposed to do and see off Algeria ourselves comfortably, we'd have faced Ghana in Round 2, then (I think) Uruguay (?) in the QFs.

Winning the group this time looks like the easier route, although no doubt a lot of people here remember the last time we played Spain in the QFs and *that* penalty by Stuart Pearce?
