Yeah but to amass a measly 2 points between them with a combined -31 GD is some going, even for them.

All a bit moot as there was nothing riding on the game but how did Mane get away with that handball against Inter! Couldn’t have been more obvious if he’d picked the ball up, scandalous decision

Benfica and PSG tied in their group. Same points, goals scored and head to head.

Any idea on the next tie breaker, tables I've seen seem to have Benfica top?

Don’t Rangers now hold the record as worst Champions League team? Lost all 6 games for 2 against 22.

Three English group winners means that Liverpool can be drawn against only Benfica, Porto, Real Madrid or Bayern in R16. Equally three German runners-up (four teams into the knockout stage) means Bayern can only draw Brugge, Liverpool, Milan or PSG.

Can't be bothered to check, but must be a long time since only one Spanish side got out of the group stage.

1998/99 - Only Real Madrid went through, along with Man Utd (obviously), Inter, Juve, Olympiacos, Dynamo Kyiv, Bayern and Kaiserslautern

Otherwise always at least 2 Spanish teams have gone through and I think only 2 to go through has only happened twice.

2004/05 - Real Madrid and Barcelona, along with Man Utd, AC Milan, Porto, Inter, Werder Bremen, Lyon, PSV, Monaco, Chelsea, Bayern, Arsenal, Liverpool. Leverkusen and Juve.

2011/12 - Real Madrid and Barcelona, along with Marseille, Inter, Basel, Bayern, Lyon, APOEL, CSKA Moscow, Zenit, Benfica, Napoli, Chelsea, AC Milan, Arsenal and Leverkusen.

Ta.

1998/99. There's some teams in there! Rosenborg, Sturm Graz, Brondby, HJK, Athletic Bilbao. Kaiserlauten were in the German third tier last season.

Indeed! I also totally forgot the Champions League had 2 group stages for a number of years. What was that all about?

I'd forgotten in 98/99 the first knockout round was the quarter finals, a lot easier to win it all back then I guess

just looked back at the early seasons of the champions league. first 2 looked rubbish! Third season had Gothenburg topping their group ahead of Man Utd, Barcelona & Galatasaray!

I wonder what the story is behind Swedish football falling behind, as in the 90's they often seemed to be the nation with the plucky underdog team who could cause an upset

also a shout out to Casino Salzburg in 95 only missing out on the QF by goal diffo!

Although an argument could be made for it being harder. For instance, Utd facing a decent Inter Milan size straight out of the group is pretty tough going.

Also only the top team from each group went through, along with the 2 best runners up, even harder to qualify for the knock-outs!

UEFA gives each club in the group stage gets €15M and also €900k for each point the club earns in the group stage

heard this mentioned in a podcast this morning when talking about the champions league and they said Hojbjerg's last minute winner was also worth €1.8M to Spurs along with them going through the group

Was the three foreigner rule in place? This really fcuked over English teams where it was fairly normal to recruit from the whole of the British Isles
