Her voice irritates me so much I almost swam to SA, tore off Peter Odemwingie's arm and beat her to death with it.

Women commentators = NO.

floyd__streete ^ LOL @ HD, the Emperor's New Clothes of television. Do you get free magic beans if you buy an HD tv?

Maguire Murked myself a bit here as i've just tried to watch NIG v GRE with Radio 5 commentary and it turned out to be a bird :x

I don't think that Jacqui Oatley is all that bad tbh. Oatley > Drury > Tyldesley.

So are you honestly going to tell me that an HD picture is not better than SD?

No she's not too bad and not unattractive either.

Fully agree with ScottishRoyals excellent post. We really are served up lazy TV pundits who get paid for their"expert" opinions and yet have not bothered to undertake any background research at all about the teams they will be commenting upon. Its all part of having "big names" in the TV studios but the likes of Shearer offer nothing...apart from bland platitudes.

ScottishRoyal However I disagree with Rev A in that this level of journalism is the same across all sports media, it can improve. Take the following examples;

I actually meant for football - I couldn't say too much about other sports, although they do seem knowledgeable in the F1 coverage.

As for the crux of the issue discussed, the lack of research, it really is quite embarrassing. In any form of consultancy, research or academic work this is a pre-requisite for good work. If you don't do it you don't get repeat business or a good grade. Sadly ITV is so bad that the BBC don't feel the need to up their game either.

what also grates with me is when you get a world cup match between two lesser nations, particularly on the BBC, they smugly sit around with a "who cares about this shitty game?" attitude as if it's beneath them to even discuss it. They somehow fail to grasp that even though they couldn't give a toss about the match, the people who have tuned in specifically to watch the game, might.

The BBC are so massively smug and self-congratulatory in each and every way, how can their condescending coverage come as surprise as anyone?

This is certainly true, but just adds to the argument to include people like O'Neill and Strachan to the 'expert' panel. These guys aren't part of the cosy clique currently on the TV and give their views whether they're popular or not. When someone else talks shit these guys pull them up on it.

Two TV highlight for me so far-

(1) Alan Shearer to old African gentlemen, “So segregation, that was bad yeh?”

(2) Andy T on ITV, “ Well some African teams have a managers from their own country but sometimes you need some organization so a European manager might be the way to go”

England win on the BBC. Shades of France 98: Two games on BBC = two wins. Two games on ITV = two losses (albeit it one on pens to Argentina).

What channel is the last 16 game on?

That'll be interesting - I can't imagine anyone would choose to watch ITV if they have a choice of coverage on both FTA channels.

Why is Drury finding it so difficult to understand that by having a Ghanaian father and not having played a senior international for Germany means that he can play for Ghana?

Maybe Drury doesn't want to play for Ghana

From reading a lot of the comments here I'm beginning to come around to the wonderfully ironic realization that ESPN coverage may be better than anything you can get in the UK.
