Flyingkiwi But, given that they use so many balls these days, how can kicking one away be considered time-wasting?

Someone has to get the next ball from the sideline to point of the free kick, that takes time. I think the booking for kicking a ball away is more based on dissent than time wasting usually, but in this case it might've been for time wasting.

Sun Tzu Only seen it the once and for me

1. he was close enough to being 'onside' that it's not worth debating. it really isn;t a law that requires 8 decimal places. it's about the human eye.
2. I don;t think he was active, and neither the defender or keeper were prevented from doing anything by anything he did.

Totally agree on point 1, but not point 2.

He's right in front of the keeper and makes a motion to try and get a touch to divert the ball. That influences the keeper as he can't commit 100% to diving to his left to cover the initial shot in case he gets the touch and puts it the other way.

It probably happened too quickly to make that much difference, but any attacker in and around a defender effects the position you take up and any action you go through because you have to be aware of that forward. I hate the not interfering rule because of it as, like Cloughie once said, if you're not interfering you shouldn't be on the pitch.

It's not ao much timewastings as unsporting conduct - by kicking the all away you're publicly showing dsssent about the decision, and/or denying the opposition the opportunity to take a quick kick.

How was it either in Van Bommels case? His side had been awarded the free kick!
