It also ignores the fact that they have taken retrospective action on a player after the officials have seen an incident - Ben Thatcher's assault on Pedro Mendes a few years ago got him a yellow at the time, but then he got a ban after the media went mental over the incident.

Two points; had Ballotelli snapped Song's leg, I guarantee you they would have taken action retrospectively, and second, had the player making such a challenge been from say Wigan or Bolton, they would also have had retrospective action taken on them.

Presumably Mancini is going to be true to his word and not play Balotelli again this season (in the same way he said Tevez would never play for Man City again..........)

Thatchers assault on Mendes was an extreme and rare action. Balotelli's over the top tackle isn't really, you probably see one or two every week in the Premier League, let alone Football League. The FA will only take retrospective decisions, or 're-refereeing' as comonurz called it, in extraoridnary cases so I don't think they can really be blamed in this case if the ref and his lino's say they saw and dealt with the incident.

If they change their rules to allow all incidents to be reviewed then the game is going to go mental. Would that be a good thing? Maybe if, in the long run, it actually cleared these incidents from the game but I really don't think it would. I can only see it adding to the dissent and lack of respect for the officials so I really can't see the point.

What I would like to see is more of the officials saying we got that one wrong because I didn't see the whole incident or severity of it from my angle. I think that would allow the FA to do something about it without opening up a whole can of worms.

If the officials saw it, then I think they should explain why they thought that it wasn't worthy of even a free kick, let alone a red card.

Exactly. But that's possibly happened and isn't, I think, under the remit of the FA who seem to get blamed for everything.

I basically agree with what you say, but it wouldn't add to dissent if the rules were also changed / administered so that dissent of all sorts was properly dealt with at all times.

Yeah you might be right RR. I think any change to handling of dissent is going to be a very long term process though.

Anything that weakens the Refs position is likely to see them get more abuse and questioning though. I'd like to see that stopped by more yellows issued for it, but that's very difficult refs to do at the time.

And again, I think you are probably right, but I really don't understand why.

Let's get one thing straight first - dissent does not = passion.

So what would the eradication of any form of dissent (apart from Rugby style captain / referee respectful conversations) take away from the game apart from crassness and unpleasantness?

Fans don't pay to watch dissent, they wouldn't miss it so its removal wouldn't take anything away from the speactators' enjoyment... many sponsors would like to see it gone altogether so it might result in more willing sponsors queueing up... etc. etc.

Easy and obvious really.
