I'm going to put it out there, that I should imagine he would not have cared less if people clapped instead of remaining silent in respect for him. The fact that people are bickering about it on here just takes away from the how sad this is and tbh it doesnt really matter.

But you're happy to have a dig at the Swansea (&Villa) fans because of the way they showed their appreciation.

That's right. From my own personal opinion, I didn't believe it was respectful of them. If you note, none of the players (including one of his best friends) clapped - they obeyed the minute's "silence" that was requested. And TV coverage clearly showed it was pockets of fans clapping - not the whole lot of them. I just felt that if you're asked to pay your respects in a certain way, the least you can do is honour that request. As I said, they could have clapped and chanted Gary Speed, Gary Speed, Gary Speed all match if they'd wanted to.

You have no soul.

Nobody else shares your opinion

Was listening on the radio and after the minute was up, the commentator said "sometimes it just works better" - then on MOTD they said it was a touching thing to applaud etc

I dont think his family phoned up Swansea and asked that it should be a minutes silence - they probably had more important things on their mind.

Officially sick now of the blanket news coverage approaching Lord Gnome levels post Diana

We now realise as of Sunday morning that Gary Speed was in fact the most saintly footballer who has ever lived, who, with his charitable activities in Wales, brought hope and succour to hundreds and millions of people all over the world.

We would like to express our sincere and deepest hypocrisy to all our readers on this tragic day and hope and pray that they will carry on buying our paper notwithstanding.

I'm not big on suicides having been friends with a lad who's brother cut his wrists in the bath and having seen at first hand the devastation wrought upon both parents and siblings. It's the ultimate act of selfishness. God only knows what dark place you would have to be in to consider allowing your family to wake up and find you dangling from the bannisters.

I'm not sure I can applaud that.

there was a massive difference at Liverpool and that was that they were remembering the death of a young child of one of the players at the same time. Chanting and applause would not have been appropriate.

the applause and chanting at Swansea was instinctive, heartfelt, moving and appropriate. IMO

surely the majority of the british public no longer buy tabloids, but get their news from a variety of online and television sources
the tabliods are forced to scrap between themselves for the minority of braindead morons left who do buy them, which is what makes them desperate to outdo each other in terms of sensationalism
in which case- its not really the peoples fault

also many people i know buy the tabloids for their excellent football coverage- and this would have little to do with the sensational shit on the front page
seems wrong to blame them for that,,,,,,

Year on year figures - about 7,000,000 copies of tabloids per day

7 million copies is about 10 % of the population, so im still right that blaming the population as a whole for getting the press "they" "deserve" is wrong

most of us deserve much much better

Tabloids work in internet form just as well - don't forget they're not funded by selling papers, they're funded by advertising so for them it's number of views and click-throughs rather than just number of people buying the paper.

id imagine(ie make up out of my own brain) that a far bigger majority of people get their news from television, non tabloid internet outlets/resources and quality papers?

big eck and the villa staff were applauding- main coverage i saw on the news/internet showed a big proportion of people clapping (50% of those in the pictures) , with 1 man hugging a clearly distraught lady, and shaking his head, its unclear whether thats in consolation with her, or disgust with the clappers.

it did seem odd to me, but theyre closer to it than us,and it probably means a little more
and i guess it just shows you cant tell people how to grieve/celebrate/respect someones life
its certainly not something that deserves days of moaning about on a thread that is in itself supposed to show our respect to the dead man.
in dragging this out i feel you are just as direspectful as the clappers

not all of the 7 million(+random numbers that you want to add on) are sensationalist tabloids and even if they were it wouldnt be 50% of the population which would be needed to warrant the "get the press we deserve" line

As the bloke had only been dead for a matter of hours - i think a minutes silence would have been better, to "offer your thoughts to his family" - then a minutes applause next weekend, to celebrate his career in football.

This is just my opinion and i understand as i'm EDL etc..   it means nothing. But can't you pay your respects on here, twitter or what ever you please (Just like the Swansea fans), and just keep all your theorys or newspaper bullshit to yourselves? None of you know him, none of you know his personal life apart from hearsay and quite frankly none of the papars know. Let him lie in peace if thats what he decided he wants and remember him for the role model he was in his playing day?
