Maguire Right on cue, the Liverpool fan boys spring into action. I'm sure Victor Meldrew will be along soon to claim he's better than Beckham

Tbf he thinks everyone's better than Beckham

Shaw is the real deal. Given Baines' (lack of) form this season he may be a lively outsider for a starting spot come June.

Chris Smalling = Carlton Palmer for the digital generation.

SLAMMED I thought Gerrard was a bit hit and miss tbh. Prefer him to Lampard though.

Better first half with some good pings out wide and drive going forward. Faded though.

Liked Lallana, despite the beard.

Sturridge had better stay fit for Brazil.

Of course.

I only caught the 2nd half and thought England looked pretty good. If it was not for Kasper it would have been a comortable win.

He must have been in England since a young age, was there no way we could have had him playing for us?

Nowhere near as bad as people are saying. It at least looks like we're trying to address the age old problem of ball retention although thats a bit difficult when your front players seem incapable or unwilling to keep the ball. At least Sturridge looked like a goal threat which is more than can be said for Rooney last night.

Thought Gerrard was good for an hour or so especially when you factor in that if Wilshire and Henderson didn't periodically fall over and/or run into people you wouldn't have known they were out there alongside him. Good to see that despite Wilshire going off we still kept our "running into people" quota up by bringing Danny Wellbeck on.

Sterling did ok but MOM?. ALOL

The Southampton boys did well especially Lallana who gives us something a little different.

I'm going to stick up for Smalling a bit too. Centre half partnerships are probably the most difficult to develop instantly, particularly when on a weekly basis both of the players play in a similiar way. But the odd little hiccup aside I thought he did well actually.

Well, that was pretty dull, probably just about worth the £20.

Sterling looked lively, if a bit raw, but he was willing to take his man on.
Wiltshire was pretty anonymous and seems to spend most of the game on the floor holding his knee/ankle
Cole had a decent 60 minutes, but where it used to look so easy for him it now looks very hard work, especially compared to Shaw who looked outrageously composed.
Lalana is so confident on the ball. Great to see an English player who always wants it.
Smallinh was really not very good at all. Is a good job he's quick, positioning and distribution were really poor.

Maguire Andy Townsend gives MOTM to Raheem Sterling.

I'm going to need a few minutes to pick the right emoticon here

Or just admit you might have been a little out with your analysis?

I wouldn't make him MOTM, but dogshit he hasn't been. There's a reason he got a decent reception when he was subbed.

Right on cue, the Liverpool fan boys spring into action. I'm sure Victor Meldrew will be along soon to claim he's better than Beckham.

I think he's a limited player and Oxlade-Chamberlain is a much better option out wide. That's it.

And I don't hate Liverpool before you start - Sturridge is on fire in general and I thought Gerrard and Johnson both had good games tonight.

Very neutral of you. Why does someone have to be a 'fan boy' to generally agree with those who said Sterling had a good game? Sky's report says 'only Sterling rose above mediocrity.' I'm hardly alone.

Not to mention the various respected national journos like Henry Winter and Oliver Kay who are identifying him as the main positive from last night and a cert to go to Brazil.

While, of course, that doesn't necessarily prove anything, it does appear that Mags is just about the only person in the country who thought Sterling was 'dogshit' last night.

I don't think he did that well - Lallana showed more in 20mins than Sterling did in the 85 he played.

Oh and Soggy

Sterling was definitely willing to take on his man but bar one exception where England hit the post his crossing was awful and his touch had a tendency to be heavy. Still very young and has potential as long as he's coached properly rather than going along the Ashley Young and Aaron Lennon path, although given who his club manager is I have doubts he will avoid that fate. Remember Raheem, YNWA! YNWA! YNWA! and all that bullshit.

Rooney was dire and certainly didn't deserve to be as cheered as loudly by the crowd as he was. I think I'm right in saying that it will soon be ten years since he scored a goal at a Tournament and he definitely has to change that if England are to progress from the group.

Impressed with Shaw and he should be going to Brazil instead of Ashley Cole, a man who seemed to be ageing rapidly with every touch of the ball. The centre of defence as a whole definitely needs working on, Cahill was fine but Smalling is a disaster waiting to happen.

Thought Denmark were unlucky to lose that and deserved a draw and if they'd had a decent striker instead of Bendtner and had Eriksen fit to provide the final ball to top off their approach play then they might have won. On that sort of showing I think a very good WC for you would be to just get out of the group because I'd be surprised if Italy (who look very decent on the evidence of the recording of their match against Spain) or Uruguay were as poor at finishing as Denmark were last night.

I know you'd sooner take a cheese grater to your balls than even grudgingly credit Rodgers with anything, but at Liverpool, Brendan is considered to have had a huge impact on Sterling's progression so far.
