Curious. What promises were those?

Given that the main bone of contention for McGhee before he left was that the board wouldn't sanction the signing of the lad from Palace , Williams (I think) I'd be fascinated to know what came after?

Yes, I think it was that the club never committed to them ahead of the following season, then on top of it all, they were dumped for Terry the Taxi despite successfully keeping Reading in the second tier on what was always a “survival only” budget. They deserved a shot at managing on a “promotion” budget, certainly wouldn’t have done as bad in that last season at EP as their replacement if they had remained and the club and Reading may well have then avoided the disastrous reign of TB2 and that dreadful period back in tier 3.
