FA Vase 4th Round
8 Coventry Sphinx 6-0 London Lions -
London lions are the same as London maccabi lions right? They are the Jewish side?
Correct - now play at their own ground - Rowley Lane - nr Barnet bottom of M1 - been there for a while after sharing up at Hemel/St Albans and Broxbourne, until they could put up lights. Read a few very favourable reports of their current facilities for the level they play at ..... but still not managed to get there yet .....
Looks as if the 'Maccabi' part, has been dropped from common usage haven't been called that since their Herts County League days , when I think they were initially based at Bushey - they've since been in SMids and then Combined Counties Leagues. As far as I can tell, they do refer to themselves as 'Maccabi London Lions' on their own social media outlets.
- technically, under FA (largely un-enforced) regs their name is probably deemed 'non-compliant.'
They aren't the only one's : see London Tigers, Met Police, FC Romania, Hashtag Utd, New Salamis, St Panteleimon, Corinthians (the Kent version) etc
(I'm pretty certain the original 'Casuals' would be exempt) as being sides whose club names do not strictly refer to their immediate locale. I'm sure there are plenty of others in the top 6 Steps, where the FA have principle jurisdiction over these kind of constraints and probably can't be bothered to apply them.
There have been a couple of re-brands, that might suggest things could get corrected eventually, when they get round to it E.g. Pegasus Juniors in the Hellenic, did recently became Hereford Pegasus - probably cos they were switching back and forth ... and back again, between League Constitutions.
In the Midlands, the Sikh (?) outfit Guru Nanak Gurdwara have now been renamed GNG Oadby Town - though that may have been more a case of merging two existing clubs.
