2019/20 Season - How will it end?

by Tony Le Mesmer » 15 Mar 2020 10:24

Worth its own thread this one as this is not going to be easy to sort out.

I think that they will do everything that they possibly can to complete the current season. Even if that means waiting until the summer.

If they null and void the season, or settle it on PPG, someone is going to get fcked over which ever way they do it and legal proceedings will follow.

Contract situations do complicate things, but that's not an insurmountable problem.

If they follow the league procedure for failing to complete the season due to a massive public health issue, good luck to anyone who thinks they'll get any traction in the courts with legal action.

My take on this is that the season will run until all fixtures are completed and the Euros are cancelled.
Then next season starts from say October with a formula for one season only in that there is capacity for say 25 fixtures with the FA Cup and League Cup abandoned for one season.
Every team then has one fixture against every other side in the division and then for the remaining 6 or so fixtures there is a draw to see who you play twice, having already established whether you are at home or away for the first set of fixtures.

Alternatively there might be just one game against the opposition clubs but the League Cup and FA Cup retained, meaning that those 2 competitions might be taken a bit more seriously than of late with a Champs League place up for grabs for the FA Cup winners.
Whether those League games are at home or away might be a tricky one to solve for fairness but presumably previous season finishing positions could be factored in to a computer programme.

All of this should be within the realms of programmers to result in a list of fixtures as fair as they can be-clubs then have to bite the bullet with whatever fixtures are thrown at them and maybe promotion and relegation is cancelled for one year only.

Whatever happens some teams will not be happy with how (metaphorically) the cards fall but so be it and it will be (hopefully) just for the one season.
I see it as a must that this season's fixtures have to be completed and the cut-off point may have to be a moveable date.

Much head scratching is probably going on for the football authorities but hopefully the end result will be workable.
Having had so many weeks off in the days to come the players could treat that as their early Summer break.

Possibles being that they may promote Leeds and Brummidge and run with a 22 team Premier next season with four to be relegated at the end of it?

The gap is 6 and 7 points respectively. How could that be justified with 9 games to go?

The league is completed, or a damn site closer than it is now, or season voided IMO... only real way and already part of the rules everyone signed up to.

Parachute payments that won't be needed could be spread around to help clubs maybe.

L1 is 2 and 7.

Give Liverpool an honorary trophy, they're that far ahead.

nobodies saying it’s justified (a bit like denying Liverpool the title), hopefully it won’t be necessary.

For it to happen it's got to be already in the rule book or justified and agreed to a level that will prevent challenge.

The FL can't just make up solutions on the fly based on what might *feel* right to a few people.

They'll finish this season whenever they can in the future and there won't be a full 2020/21 season (if at all).

Post virus the footballing world may look completely different.

With would be the best way of doing it.

That, and maybe a truncated 2020/21 season, as already alluded to elsewhere .

I think there is a fair chance the next season won't start, let alone this current one ending.

I've seen suggestions that we should just end this season at the end of June, cut out the Euros and start next season at the usual time. Which doesn't make sense because:
A - no-one knows when this pandemic is going to end so there's no way of knowing when the season may feasibly end
B - footballers are humans and not robots and need a proper rest

Think the whole topic of football and scheduling should be swept under the carpet until it dies down a little. Very little point of speculating at this moment in time

There are a oxf*rd tonne of legal implications and financial implications we cannot and have not thought about. Not to mention player contracts which are tied into a certain date or games and appesrences. TV rights? Club finances and other contracts? Insurances for this aren't in place for smaller teams who rely on financial money from leagues.

It's all a mess!!!!!!

Come back (behind closed doors probably) on April 3rd, cancel the FA cup, play twice a week, job done. There's no way you don't complete the season somehow without knackering football in this country forever. Biased or not Liverpool are Premier League champions and only desperate haters (Hi Brobot!! :P ) could argue against that. However, all the other promotion and relegation outcomes absolutely have to be decided correctly.

The big issue is Europe obviously, if UEFA were definitely canning the euros you'd think they'd have cancelled the playoffs due in a couple of weeks already wouldn't they? I do reckon there'd be more chance of the Euros going ahead as planned if they weren't such an absolute nonsense this year, thanks Michel!

Of course all of this kind of doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Someone should tell Karen Brady that if the season gets cancelled that it'll start again in August but all clubs must have the same manager and players as they did in August '19. See how keen she is on it then.

Keeping hold of Filipe Anderson? They might take it, tbh.

If it extends into May then I can't see anything but a cancellation with all teams remaining as they are.

The worlds health and economy is of far more importance than somebody winning the league, or getting relegated. Perhaps a share of next seasons TV money will be made available to all clubs across the leagues to help soften the financial blow they will take

Appears we are moving towards a cancellation of the Euros, and completion of league fixtures over the summer, with a late start to 2020/21. And this seems sensible.

In the event the season is truncated, what has most support is apparently the model of 'promotion only', where 22 teams would enter next season's Premier League, and teams promoted from lower divisions accordingly, with relegation resolved next season. Not it's not 'fair' on the likes of Fulham, but a resolution needs to be found and there are plenty of club and player contractual issues arising from scrapping the season entirely.

Could they cancel the domestic cups?

Come back after the summer and complete this season, then take a break, start the season late (October, for example) but don't bother with the League Cup or FA Cup. Should free up a considerable number of evenings and weekends

League Cup 100% should be binned off. I would consider changing the Champions League too for a season. 32 Champions of Europes top leagues in a mini tournament playing home and away legs.

That may catch on - they could call it the European Cup
