Germany in 96/97, where 13 of the 15 clubs not relegated qualified for Europe(but Monchengladbach rejected the chance to play in the Intertoto cup so only 12 actually took part)

Crikey - wonder if they are the lowest placed side to win a European competition in recent times?

Edit: was a remarkable run through the competition. This was in the days of it being a two-legged cup competition, Schalke won the trophy despite failing to win a single away game. They won all six of their home games in Gelsenkirchen without conceding a goal.

Second edit: when Villa won the European Cup in 1982, they finished 11th in the league.

La Liga very close to losing 2nd spot (to Serie A) in the UEFA Country Coefficient. They've been in the top 2 leagues for the past 26 years

Rangers draw 0-0 in their re-arranged fixture with Dundee.

Their reaction to the original postponement is the point at which they lost it mentally IMO. They've now got to go to Celtic Park and win to really have a chance of lifting the title. They haven't won there for 5 years and only once since 2010.

Sevilla won the Europa League last season, whilst coming 12th in Spain. Eintracht Frankfurt won it the previous season, coming 11th in Germany; they finished above 12th and 13th only on goal difference.

Eintracht simply stopped caring in the league once it became clear they couldn't qualify for Europe via the league and put all their focus on the EL.

They were 6th at the winter break, started badly in the 2nd half of the season, losing 5 of the first 8 - which dropped them out of the race so they just went through the motions from then. They didn't win a single one of their last 8 league games but won 5 of 7 games in the Europa over the same period.

MEXICAN CLAXON

As expected, batshit crazy keeper Nahuel Guzmen gets a monster ban for shining a green laser pen in his opponents eyes IN THE MIDDLE OF A GAME

11 game ban

Previously the keeper has been sent off for things such as:

Doing literal magic tricks in the middle of his goal in a penalty shootout (he was good tbf)

He got sent off and then started Running away in the middle of a game and hiding under a tarp on the side of the pitch , and refused to leave

Doing a mime dance and sending off the ref with a pretend card

Serie A confirmed as one of the two leagues to be given an extra Champions League place for 2024-25

Brilliant news for Bologna who are currently in 4th, 8 points ahead of 6th.

and if either Roma or Atalanta (currently 5th & 6th in Serie A) win the Europa League but finish outside of the top 4 then they go into the Champions League via their win and Italy get a 6th team into the Champions League through league placing

Bursaspor, the club with the big crocodile stadium, who were Turkish champions in 2010 and were in the top division until 2019, just had their 3rd relegation in 5 seasons and are now down in the 4th division. Financial problems and transfer bans as they tumbled down.

Winston Biscuit 97th minute equaliser for Leverkusen to keep the unbeaten Bundesliga season going

They will just not be beaten.

89th minute equaliser at West Ham last week.
On 30th March they beat Hoffenheim 2-1, having been a goal behind after 88 minutes.
Two weeks earlier they were 2-1 behind at home to Qarabag in the Europa League after 93 minutes, and they won 3-2.
In the first leg at Qarabag they had equalised in the 92nd minute.
Third game of the season at Bayern they equalised through a 94th minute penalty.

A proper record in sights for Leverkusen - since the introduction of European competition in the 1950s, the longest unbeaten run in all competitions is Benfica's 48 games (1963-65). The equaliser at the weekend took Leverkusen to 45 games, equalling the second longest such run of Dinao Zagreb and NK Rijeka, both of Croatia.

In similar scenes, Red Star Belgrade of Serbia were a goal down to Partizan with a minute of normal time remaining at the weekend - and their European record 128-game unbeaten home record, dating back seven years, was under threat. Cue two goals in a minute, and the record secure, now at 129.
