Manuel Almunia England keeper?

by TBM » 30 Jul 2009 16:01

Manuel Almunia is apparently now a British citizen. As he has never played for Spain he qualifies for a place in the England squad. He's openly stated that he would accept an England call-up.

So, if you were Fabio Capello would you consider calling him up, considering our lack of decent keepers!!?

I'd just about be able to accept if he was that much better than what we already have.

But he's really not that good is he?

He looks like Waluigi. And he's well good on Mario Strikers. So yeah, call him up.

Scotland need him more, let them have him. Or Wales, or Nire.

Its another option though....give him 1 cap just to bank him incase he suddenly becomes good.

To be honest, Almunia is no better than Robinson,Foster,Green or Carson. In a sense,he is even worse. For me,Robinson is still our best goalkeeper.

Anyone who thinks Robinson is a good keeper clearly has no properly functioning brain/eyes. Either stick him in now or keep with Foster.

Thats quite a harsh remark. I never saw nothing inadequate with Robinson in goal.

Towards the end of his Spurs career nothing went for Robinson. That divot from an attempted back-pass playing for England was the icing on the cake. He put on weight and became less agile as a result.

However, for Blackburn last season he was pretty decent. He's back in shape, and I think moving himself out of the spot-light by going to a club with much lower expectations that Spurs has been a good move.

I'm struggling to think of many better current English goalkeepers to be honest.

I remember when he was younger he had a spell at Leeds that was superb and even kept Nigel Martyn out of the side.....shame he didn't really build on that.

Well seeing as we have a Coach who has no connection to England whatsoever, id say its ok to have any player with a British Passport.

But he's shit.

Agreed. Almunia must be one of the most improved keepers in The Premier League. A lot of people have the memory of him replacing Lehmann early in 2005-2006 and not performing at all well (in a struggling Arsenal side) but he is a completely different keeper now (three years ago, I would not have believed it).

The complete opposite could be said about Robinson, on the other hand. Two or three years ago, I was met with laughter here when I claimed that Shay Given would make the English team.
