Speculation : Benoit Assou-Ekotto

by SpaghettiHoop » 01 Jul 2012 10:54

Tribal Football - Tottenham are set to move for Porto fullback Alvaro Pereira – casting doubt on the future of Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
Worth a punt?

1) He unashamedly plays for money and not enjoyment.
2) He's too good for us.
3) I would love us to sign him.

He's admitted that, like David Batty, he actually doesn't like football that much. He doesn't see the appeal of it all... Though, it pays him a fair wage.

Oh, and no chance...

Absolutely awful player in my opinion, lazy, reads game badly, mis-times so many tackles, don't know how he doesn't get booked more often.

Can't stand him

Agreed with all of that.

I know fans don't like the "plays for money' thing - but if you actually read more on this guy (he writes a lot in the Evening Standard) he seems like a very decent human being, far removed from the majority of his fellow pros. Very much your Ulises de La Cruz type pro.

Spurs fans love him. He was quality last season

Don't worry tho - this won't happen.

No thanks..
From what ive seen of him, he seems very inconsistent, and quite clumsy. Always thought he would suit a midfiled role much better, hes got pace and can deliver a good cross (sometimes).

I was going to say it''s unfair that he's only in it for the money. My reading of what he said is that he regards it as a job, albeit a very well paid one that will allow him to do what he wants outside the game once he retires, and unlike a lot of other professional footballers, he doesn't live and breathe the game and the whole celebrity culture that it has spawned.

I'm sure if lots of footballers were honest they would admit that they don't like playing football. Just because it is the childhood dream of many who are not good enough to make it doesn't mean the lucky ones who play professionally and don't like their jobs (for whatever reason) should get criticised for their honesty. I, for one, think there are a lot of reasons why it would be a job I wouldn't like...injuries, spending all your time in an all male environment, fears of what to do when the footballing career is over, the downs of relegation, being dissed by fans, being scrutinised in the media and, ultimately, a lack of job satisfaction.

Apparently footballers and other sportsmen are at a high risk of suicide following leaving the game because they can't stand not playing any more, it's too much of a shock to the system - possible theory for why people like Gary Speed (RIP) take their own lives

Just a touch out of our league! Also don't get the criticism he's been receiving in this thread. He was fantastic last season (hence out of our league).

Makes Assou-Ekotto's approach all them nore admirable then. Treat it as a job, don't make it your life, don't believe the bullshit and hype and you will be in abeeter position to cope when your career is over.

Doesn't make him any less committed on the pitch, just makes him a bit more pragamatic off it.
