WoodleyRoyal
linkenholtroyal was just saying from what is floating round online its not exactly young hungry and exciting players.....

we've got plenty of young and hungry players in the academy....

it would just be nice to be associated with some young exciting players from the lower league, rather than players that are past there prime, or been heavily linked to injuries. they may do a short term job for a season but not a long term solution.....

What about being associated with exciting players of our own?

True but they never usually get a chance unless its due to necessity (i.e. injuries)

True. What happened to the good old days when we signed the likes of Alex McCarthy, Alex Pearce, Jem Karacan, Hal Robson-Kanu and Jordan Obita?

hahaha ok yes but that's 5 players over the last 6 seasons (if you count hector) that are first team regulars without injuries to the squad.
less than 1 a season and wheres McCarthy now.

A player a season is a good success rate you muppet. We're above that having brought through
Pearce, Karacan, Sigurdsson, Church, Robson-Kanu, Obita, McCarthy & Hector all of whom have held down regular starting positions in the first team. Players who could conceivably have cost us at least £4m in transfer fees to get them, and that's pre-peak ability prices.

On top of that we've got Cooper, Kuhl, Tanner, Stacey, Long, Tshibola and Edwards who have all made their first team debuts. Then there's some more who are a little further behind them.

That's incredible.

also ben hamer and james henry, also sean morrison, shane long and antonio although it is debatable if they are classed as youth products

ok I am a big enough man to admit when I am wrong we have produced a lot of talent. I was just talking of the times when we bought young and up and coming players like Doyle, Long, Sidwell, Shorey, Leroy Lita, Adam Lefondre. players that have there best years in front of them rather than behind them like Bridge, the Pog and all the players we seem to be associated with now who are over 30 or older. the only 2 I can think of over the last 2 seasons is Williams and Norwood. (i'm not counting drenthe because he hasn't progressed with us just gone awol) :D

Can't really understand your point.. It's important to sign some players in and around 30 with any squad, as they provide the experience. There just isn't an issue there, our average age is 25.1 - hardly old. Maybe your point is that we don't sign players with their best years yet to come....

linkenholtroyal the only 2 I can think of over the last 2 seasons is Williams and Norwood

We've only signed 3 players this season, Cox, Ferdinand and Norwood - so 2/3 are good buys there (you forgot Mr. Cox) - and we only signed 2 players last season, Drenthe and Williams - both of which you just said were good 'potential' buys.

As you mention Pog and Bridge, I assume you are counting 2012/13 too, in which we signed Gunter, Mariappa, Blackman, Akpan, Carrico and Guthrie. All young(ish) players, which could easily be classified as having "their best years in front of them rather than behind them"

It was clear as day when he was here he wasn't going to make it as a striker. He read the game well enough, so perhaps is better suited behind the striker, but it wont be long before he nosedives through the leagues and ends up at Pompey or Oxford.
