Ian Royal You've shown they had them, not that they needed them.

QPR 2013/14 - top scorer had 17
Cardiff 2012/13 - top scorer had 8
Hull 2012/13 - top scorer had 9
Reading 2011/12 - top scorer had 12
West Ham 2011/12 - top scorer had 14
QPR 2010/11 - top scorer had 19
Swansea 2010/11 - top scorer had 19
Newcastle 2009/10 - top scorer had 17
West Brom 2009/10 - top scorer had 13
Blackpool 2009/10 - top scorer had 16

So that's 10/18 promoted sides from the last 6 years who didn't have a 20+ goalscorer. Even including the two 19s it's only 56/44

I'm amazed at the number who've gone up without someone scoring 15+ let alone 20+

But of course they had a lot of players who scored quite a few! You don't go up unless you score lots of goals. We have very few who can score goals so that what needs rectifying.

SCIAG
YateleyRoyal :| at using the Pozzos as a yardstick.

If they can do it, we can do it. Maybe they can do it more reliably, but all the same.

If you'd like more examples, Burnley paid a combined £2m for Barnes, Vokes, and Ings (including only £350k for 20 goal Vokes), Swansea paid £900k for the front three that got them promoted, Southampton paid £1m apiece for Lambert and Sharp, Leicester's two main strikers cost them £1m between them. Grant Holt cost Norwich £400k, Cardiff and Hull both went up without having a player score 12 goals, even Bournemouth "only" paid £3m for their main striker.

It's just not true at all that you need to spend £4m on a 20-goal striker to get promoted - most promoted teams don't. £1m seems to be about the going rate but you can pick them up for less.

Have you not seen how the transfer market has changed since then? You can still go up with average players if you have a regular goalscorer. You can't go up with a good defence but no goals.

Since a whole 2 years ago? Wow.

Total goals scored for the promoted teams I listed:
QPR: 60
Cardiff: 72
Hull: 61
Reading: 69
West Ham: 81
QPR: 71
Swansea: 69
Newcastle: 90
West Brom: 89
Blackpool: 74
Avg: 73

Compared to last season's examples of 98, 91 and 88 - avg 92

Facts, apparently you can try to argue with them.

What a bizarre question !

Indeed.

Caskey, Asaba, Murty, Forster, Convey, Lita, Seol, Fae, Halford, Bikey, Matejovsky, Mills, Mariappa, Gunter, Williams, Sa...

And doesn't that just read as an endless list of unqualified successes.

Fed up with the will we/won't we, Beric,Donaldson and now Hurtado. Just bite the bullet and get Alf back.
Like him or not , he'll give us 12+ goals a season, even did in the Prem.

Oh yeah. Forgot Blackman.

No I'm not joking. All of them were big money signings at the time we signed them.

Most of them equalled or broke our record transfer fee.

I think you've forgotten who we are and what our resources are.

Paddy
You need to get into the real world. We are not QPR, who can throw around money they don't have and laugh at the consequences.
We are not going to compete with Chelsea for John Stones.
If you think we are going to spend £10 million on a player (or whatever your definition of 'big money' is) then you are going to be disappointed.
The sums simply don't add up. We're better off financially now than we have been for a while, but that simply means we are not being chased for tax and we don't have to flog players off as soon as someone comes sniffing.
But I can't see us competing with Middlesboro or Forest to spend daft money.

Can you name one??

Surely this question isn't asking what I think it's asking? I named eight teams who got promoted without a £4m striker hitting 20 goals for them in the very post you quoted.

Do you want me to name strikers who will score 20 goals in the Championship soon who also won't cost much? I can't do that, but I know they exist. I know it will probably rain on at least 5 days in March 2020, but I couldn't tell you which days.

As for the suggestion that the market for Championship strikers has undergone a huge change in the last two or three years, I'm not sold. Most teams aren't paying £3m for strikers even now. The summer that Blackburn got fleeced for Jordan Rhodes, Burnley signed Ings and Vokes for less money and subsequently got promoted off the back of their goals. Yeah, McCormack has bumped the roof up again, but that has been a fairly isolated incident.

Only Graham can invent a delete subject, and he'll need you to PM him with a strong argument as to why this is necessary, along with pictures of your penis.

Big money signings for us, yeah.

Big money signings by Premier League or even Championship standards, no.

But I guess we're Reading, not QPR.

Spoke to another Slovenian friend this weekend about Beric and he as amazed that he was now worth around 5m euros. He did say though that he's an amazing fighter, loves football and is not in the slightest bit interested in money or 'living the life'.

Anyway, I assume Reading have moved on so perhaps one day this thread will too ;)
