Rumour - Hunt to Celtic

by songvip » 13 Jan 2011 14:06

http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/whelans-wolves-move-rests-on-boss-pulis-finding-midfield-cover-2494342.html

Meanwhile, Celtic and a number of Championship clubs are waiting in the wings if Noel Hunt is unable to reach agreement on a new contract with Reading. The Waterford man is approaching the end of his three-year deal and is keen to stay with the Berkshire club after striking up a solid partnership with Shane Long since his return from injury.

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old will have no shortage of options if the Madejski Stadium authorities fall short on his expectations. It's believed that Celtic would look to thrash out a pre-contract agreement.

Reading striker Noel Hunt is a £500,000 target for Celtic. From the ever reliable Daily Star

Hope Noel stays either way

He is a big Celtic fan, so if a bid does come in, its bye bye Hunty.

There is quite possibly some mileage in this, over the past three or so years I have completely mistrusted Madejski and Hammond over transfers, we now have plenty of striking options, that looks good in numbers but very week in quaity, would never surprise me to see Hunt go after we have had a massive spend so far in the window. The main man will want to recoup his outlay, as well as starting to budget for next seasons £4m shortfall.

This may have legs as he's coming near to the end of his contract and he's probably a high earner, as he was signed the first season back in the Championship. Personally I wouldn't be that bothered if we got decent money for him.

Although Hunt hasn't scored many goals in the last few games, I still think he links up well with Long. Wins a lot of headers and flicks on for Long to go on and then make the finish. We could all see at the weekend that the Church and Long combo doesn't work that well and it would be a lot to ask of Manset to just step in and be the perfect partner for Long.
I do worry about Hunt and his injuries though - he picks up niggles very easily

I wouldn't be too fussed if he went either.

He's a decent player, but in the 2 and half seasons he's been here he's only started 40 odd league games, the majority of which he's not been fit enough to finish, and come off the bench 26 times. His scoring record is respectable, his workrate excellent and brings a lot to the team when he can play but what's the point of having a player on decent money who isn't available often enough.

If we're pushed for cash and every penny of the wage bill needs to be maximised I'd say get rid of him for some cash if we can. A loan signing, one of our new gambles, Church or a proper replacement for Hunt such as Morison would potentially be a better use of those resources.

We would get hardly anything for him in this transfer window as his contract is up at the end of the season. It is more likely that Celtic are looking at getting him to sign a pre-contract agreement for a move in the summer. They have already done this with a player from Forest.

They are buying Kris Commons so Hunt should still be in a blue and white shirt come Feb

If an offer of say £500K came in I could see RFC taking it but any less and I doubt they would consider it.

I really like Hunty and we always seem to do better when he has a run in the team BUT he does seem to be very injury prone and that is a concern and is why I assume we have not rushed to give him a new contract yet.

Why? What difference does the Commons purchase make?

They only need and are on look out for 1 attacking player. They already have stokes and hooper

I know Hunt played a bit on the wing for United up there, but he and Commons are pretty different type of player and I'd be amazed if it's one or the other.

Hooper and Stokes are, like Hunt, really centre forwards whereas Commons is a winger or can play in behind the forward(s) if required. They also have Ledley, Maloney, Samaras and now Ljungberg but it doesn't seem to stop them sniffing around.

What makes you so sure they're only after one attacking player, irrespective of where/how they play?

Can't understand why Stokes isn't playing in the English prem

he was a wonder-kid for Arsenal and keeps scoring in Scotland
