Chris Gunter to Cardiff

by gdroyal » 07 Jun 2013 23:48

It said in the Metro gossip column this morning that Cardiff were interessted in signing Chris Gunter. Can't see why the would buy him but if we can get out £2 million that we bought for him from Cardiff, I would sell him, with Bridge at LB, Kelly at RB with Cummings as a back up.

I think he'll be better than most people expect next season, and him and McCleary (if Kebe goes, that is) down the right side could be pretty damn effective, like they were at Forest. Besides, they're besties anyway, Chris won't go anywhere without Garath.

I'd be very disappointed if we lost Gunter. Granted he didn't have a great season last year but he has proven quality at championship level and given his age, I'm confident he can be a solid premier league RB for years to come. especially if he is playing under a quality manager which I believe we are lucky to have at our club.

Arguably, Gunter is one of Reading's most improved players. Earlier in the season, I would willingly have said:"Get rid..." but now I am not so sure.

If he is happy to go to Cardiff, however....

Your opinion. I think Adkins will prefer Gunts at right back. He gets up and down the flanks better than Kelly.

Gunter has time on his side - pace too! I reckon a season in the Championship could do a world of good for him, he's Wales' first choice right back too? That must've helped him last year like HRK.

Simple isn't it. We have three good right backs. We only need two. Two of them can cover left back, so we'll probably be content to keep them all if nothing shows up. But if we get a good offer for any of the three, that one'll go and we'll look at bringing in a second (probably up and coming) specialist left back.

Providing we can line up a LB, we just cannot lose by selling one of these three for reasonable money.

Think Cummings will go in all honesty. I would have Kelly at right back, Bridge at left back, Gunter providing cover on both sides.

Let's hope he stays. He was improving all the time last season under Adkins.

Cardiff can do one

Not fussed if he goes. Would be nice to hold onto him, but pissing away the wages on that many right backs? Gunter, Kelly & Cummings with Mapps and Karacan also able to play there plus the youngsters. Would like to see one of them move on.

Welsh player linked to Welsh team, strange. Would definitely be a shame if he goes.

Will never be a Murty and that is the yardstick.

Just because he has improved a bit, so what? And his partnership with McCleary was in a Forest team that nearly got relegated.

We have got to start thinking bigger and better, not this improving tripe.

Karacan will never be a Sidwell, shall we get rid of him too? Gunter is on an upward trajectory and a year with 30 odd starts will do a world of good. If a player isn't the best we've ever had by the age of 23 shall we get rid automatically?

We're not in the premiership anymore, we're going to have to make do sometimes.

On the evidence of last season I think Adkins might prefer Gunter to Kelly.

Why would that be? You could just as easily say that Gunter was lucky he profited from Kelly being able to take over at Left Back, as you could say Gunter was picked ahead of Kelly at Right Back who was lucky there was a weak spot at Left Back for him to fill in at.

And the first one seems marginally more likely to me given Kelly performed well at Right Back and was picked there ahead of Gunter until Harte was dropped.

That is not correct. Kelly played one game under Adkins at right back (arsenal away) before Gunter slotted in. Also Gunter can also play left back but he preferred to place Kelly at left back and leave Gunter in his favoured position.

I'm not sure who I prefer tbh, Kelly is solid and dependable, Gunter is attacking and let's say...unpredictable. Probably Kelly edges it slightly.

Gunter for the Championship imo. Unfair on Kelly considering Premier League exp, etc, but how else will Gunter improve?
