Dolan to Leeds?

by WoodleyRoyal » 09 Jun 2014 12:44

Royals' academy manager appears to be a shock target for United chairman Massimo Cellino and is the favourite to replace Brian McDermott according to several bookmakers.
Reading are staying silent on rumours that Eamonn Dolan is a leading candidate for the vacant manager's job at Leeds United.

Royals' academy manager appears to be a shock target for United chairman Massimo Cellino and is the favourite to replace Brian McDermott according to several bookmakers.

Skybet have Dolan as 2/5 favourite, ahead of Gary McAllister and Dave Hockaday who are both 13/2 but Royals are refusing to comment on the speculation.

It is thought Cellino is keen to hire someone to work under a director of football at the club and that was one of the reasons behind McDermott's departure.

The United chairman, who wants a British manager, was due to meet with his top three candidates at the weekend and is expected to appoint a new man sometime this week.

"I have always said I wanted a British coach for this club," he said.

"I am a man of my word and that is still the case. I want to get someone in place soon."

If it was to be Dolan, the move would come as a real surprise given his friendship with McDermott and his lack of managerial experience.

He had a successful 2003/04 season in charge of Exeter City in the Conference, almost qualifying for the play-offs but then left in September 2004 to join Reading.

Since then he has worked wonders with Royals' academy, bringing several players through who have gone on to play in the first-team including Jem Karacan, Alex McCarthy, Alex Pearce, Gylfi Sigurdsson and most recently Jordan Obita.

And last season under his guidance Reading's Under-21s won the Premier League Cup while the U18s reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final, the furthest any Royals side has ever got in the competition.

During the 2012/13 season, Dolan did take charge of one first-team game for Reading following the sacking of McDermott.

He was in the dug out as Royals were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Nigel Adkins was appointed soon after.

I'd sooner lose any of our first team players than Dolan.

We are just getting picked to pieces. It depends if Dolan has been paid correctly or not. If he hasnt and his future is uncertain he will very likely go. However I am sure he acknowledges Cellino is a fruitcake who will likely dispose of him at the first jot of a wobble

We've sold 1 player and released 4 with 1 retiring.

I wouldn't really call that being picked to pieces.

I wanted Dolan to replace Adkins tbh. Immediately, if possible.

I would have thought McDermott would have some words of warning for an old colleague and friend, given his own experience with Leeds and Cellino

Dolan isn't British, he's Irish.

The transfer window doesn't officially open until the 1st July.

We've already lost our top goalscorer for the last 3 seasons, our captain, an ex-england international and two players that won us promotion 2 years ago. It sounds like we're about to lose our academy director, the only redeeming quality of our club at the moment, directors are resigning and debt collectors are running the sale of the club.

Under normal circumstances Dolan would be insane to take the Leeds job as he will probably only last 6 months. So if he takes it I think that further indicates what a mess RFC has become as perhaps he thinks 6 months at Leeds is longer than he has left at RFC.

Or he has confidence in his own ability to do well with Leeds, and thinks being manager of a Championship club >>> being Academy Manager of a Championship club.

And if he takes the Leeds job and gets the sack after 6 months, he will get a nice little pay-off

This would suck. Seems like short-term madness from Dolan.
