Sky Sports understands several Premier League and Championship sides are tracking Middlesbrough defender George Friend.

Friend is entering the final year of his current deal at Middlesbrough and as yet no new deal has been agreed.

The news has alerted a host of clubs with the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Reading all keeping tabs on his situation at the Riverside.

Friend has established himself as a key player at Middlesbrough since arriving from Doncaster in the summer of 2012.

The versatile defender, who can play centre-back or left-back, is regarded as one of the best defenders outside the Premier League and was named Middlesbrough's Player of the Season last term.

Already has a Reading goal to his name too. Looked pretty useful.

Why would he leave? I'd love this signing but can't see it happening at all. He's like Ian Harte except he can defend.

Maybe we could play our best left back as a left back for a start.

Hopefully Cardiff pay a Mills-esque fee then and we get Friend in. Would be laughing.

and yes, the left winger that isn't quite a left winger but thinks he's a central midfielder when in reality he's a left back.

They might want that but they wouldn't get it. Not in the last year of his contract.

Signed a new 4-year deal at Boro. Agent did a fine job in improving that contract..
