KC Royal The problem with Gunter isn't that I think he's shit, he rarely has a bad game for me when I see him, it's that I expect more for someone of his experience. Over the last couple of years I've generally been more impressed with his Wales performances, and he's played centre-back at times in those games.

I think we'd miss him if he left though unless we signed a replacement.

In my view the problem with Gunter is that when he's bad he is so shit its unbelievable. He has some really good games, but he just seems really random. Lets not forget Brian signed Kelly while was there (here).

I think the club should sign him up again - whats the alternative? Get £500k but have to spend £1m on a new player? That equates to £10k/week over a year. Maybe just stump up the wages and get him signed up?!?!?!

A few questions

In all his time at RFC how many goals has Gunter scored?
In all his time at RFC how many goals has Gunter created directly (i.e. a full assist)?
In all his time at RFC how many goals has Gunter played a major part in? (e.g. a great cross, shot/header from his cross then a goal)

In all his time at RFC how often has Gunter had their winger in his pocket?

I can only remember one goal but apparently it's 3 goals (1 league) and 8 assists, in 146 games, over 13,000 minutes. Much as I like the bloke, I could never say he has EVER dominated the opposition winger. For me his best attribute has been using his athleticism to cover someone else's mistake, but he rarely gets in a great tackle, and I don't think many fans would say they feel "safe" when the opposition winger is attacking him.

By comparison Jordan Obita has 1 Goal and 13 assists in 104 appearances, 8870 minutes, and I'd say he was better defensively than Gunts. (Obviously not all these assists are as FB)

Ian Harte had 15 Goals and 15 Assists in 99 Appearances (8,500 Minutes) and Murty was 1-3 in 19,000 Minutes

My point in the previous post was not that Gunts "should have" scored goals and had plenty of assists
but that the argument against his relative weaknesses as a defender has been his attacking "prowess"
but I see him as quite timid going forward, checking back a lot and so on

If only Gunter took free kicks and penalties and was used as a target at free kicks then maybe his stats would be similar to Harte. We tend to keep him back as the cover man at corners ....

Are you serious ? Ian Harte delivered top quality at set pieces. Maybe we keep Gunter back for a reason such as can't deliver a set play / can provide recovery pace ?

Gunter is a quality and steady right back. Selling him would be a mistake. Our fans are quite dillusional at times!

A level of quality that contributes to us being 14th in the division. Such low expectation s Paul..

You're not far wrong :-) Let's hope the next two windows move us in the right direction. Some individual changes are needed but a balance in the side also needs to be found

Not sure why Gunter is getting any stick. He's one of the most consistent players in our squad. He's also a right back, one of the least influential positions on the pitch; can't be expected to be a 'game changer'.

I give up. If ever I find myself bored enough as dave royal/jojo, I'll trawl through the highlights of every game and compile every single mistake he has made. Unfortunately, for obvious reason, it wouldn't show up all the times he could have delivered a decent ball into the box, but didn't.

Fingers crossed, in fact I'm sure that I wouldn't be the only one willing to drive him to wherever he wants to go :D

True.

But the point still remains that Gunts doesn't really do a lot attack-wise
and he is in now way a difficult-to-beat defender

I'm not slagging him off, but it would be hard to think of him as a "great" defender

Not sure these Gunter 'mistakes' will feature heavily in ahighlights package !

And you could probably pick almost any player and come up with an extensive list of errors. Football is an error strewn game, most players get at least as much wrong as they do right.

He actually does a fair bit. He's often used as a decoy runner, goes round the left back on the touch line creating a gap inside which McLeary bursts through. Not a glamorous role, but it's a regular ploy.
Defensively he's competent enough to have played 360 games all at or above Championship level....

Coppelled_Streets So do I. He's a decent right-back at this level, probably our fittest player. £500k is nothing. What replacement are we going to get with that?! May as well see out his contract if we're not extending it.

Depends what you look for in a right back ..
