RUMOUR - Gary O'Neil to Reading?

Linked to West Ham and Reading, should he choose not to stay.
We could do with a premiership experienced winger/midfielder.

To take the place of?

Dont day Harper, because Coppell's lovechild has cemented his place in Readings midfield come what may!

I can't see him wanting to drop down a division.

9 months too late.

We should've snapped him up in August when we had the chance. His work rate and creativity, in the middle or on the right to cover for Little, would've been the perfect addition to our midfield.

If West Ham are interested I think there is only one winner.

He cost the same as Fae.

What a joke.

No, he cost twice as much as Faé. Still a joke though.

To be fair to SKDD at the time there were a lot of reports that he went for around 2.5. There are some reports, and more recently, that say it was 5.

I reckon the truth is probably something to do with the clauses in the contract because he had issues getting through his medical so I'd bet Boro didnt want to stump up too much initially.

They paid £2.5m up front. The £5M was including add ons based on O'Neil and Boro's success.

Fair enough. In which case, even more of a joke. Mind you, I don't think we would have been able to compete with Boro for his signature.

He moved without his family to the other side of the country and now wants to leave.

He's a London boy, would never had wanted to go Boro if we'd tried to sign him. He wanted to leave 'Boro in Jan, but couldn't cause of the 3 club rule.

O'Neil >>>>> Fae + Rosenior (both of whom we were told would play right wing the season by Coppell.)

Coppell said at the forum

O'Neil 'we looked at him and we ummed and ahhd over signing him, we thought Little would be back within 2 months, but it was a year in the end. In hindsight I maybe should have done something, but i felt at the time If I'm not sure then I shouldn't do it'

Taylor 'We liked Taylor but we were only going to do anything if Nicky Shorey left in January. He didn't so we didn't do anything, even though both we and Matty would agree he's probably better on the left hand side of midfield'

Cahill 'We liked Cahill too but we didn't feel he was £5million better than what we currently have'

'In hindsight should we have signed them? Probably, they couldn't have done much worse'

Interesting stuff. Much of which backs up posts that were ridiculed on here at the time.

I do think these are mistakes that have come back to bite us in the arse. Even if they didn't play so much they would've added some depth, freshened up the squad and put some pressure on the likes of Shorey to perform. Our lack of options really cost us unfortunately.

CCBAP - Championship could be a problem. I think he's good enough for the Premiership and won't drop down a division, unless in the Jan transfer window we are in a good position to get promoted.

Who would have thought that James Beattie would have signed for Sheffield Utd (although the £40k per week may have helped)

If there is even the slightest chance of Gary O'Neil coming to Reading, I really hope Reading are all over him. We still haven't seen enough of Little to see if he will get over the injury and be as useful as before, and he could also do a nice job in the centre for us.
