Skysports.com understands Glenn Hoddle has emerged as a candidate for the vacant managerial post at Reading.

The Royals are on the lookout for a new boss having dispensed with Brendan Rodgers' services last week.

Brian McDermott has been handed the role on an interim basis and oversaw a 1-1 draw against Bristol City at the weekend.

Hoddle has been out of management since leaving Wolves in 2006, dedicating his time instead to running a football academy in Spain and media work.

Reading have said they will take their time with getting a new man in but would see the appointment of Hoddle as somewhat of a coup given his excellent record.

Successful spells at Swindon and Chelsea led to the England job, before further good work at Southampton, Tottenham and Wolves.

Hmmm, lives just up the road of course so presumably the standard 2+2=5 from the media

Glenn Hoddle - Would he be the right man?

by JR » 23 Dec 2009 08:58

Daily Mirror (and Talksport) are heavily linking Hoddle with the job this morning.

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Gl ... 66439.html

Can't decide if he would be the right man, but here are my initial thoughts:

Pros
- My first feeling was excitement on hearing the speculation
- Good connections in the game
- Did very well at Chelsea and was on the way to being a very good England manager
- Plays an attractive passing game
- Young players are important to him (evidenced by his academy), so I expect he would give our promising young crop every chance of developing.

Cons
- Not been successful at all clubs (e.g. Spurs and Wolves)
- Been out of the game for a while (although this may make him more determined to be successful with Reading)

What do you think?

tbh we could do alot worse
but would he want it? what with his commitments to his academy

i wouldnt mind him being our manager and would be happy if he were appointed.

Yep, it's all over Talksport this morning too.

I'd be happy with that.

Me too.

Somehow doubt there's anything much in it though.

Hoddle is insane. He shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the club I love.

I would be happy with Hoddle, he might have a few alternative methods here and there but he is also a very good manager, but the worry would be how long it would be til he lost it with the players

I think the older Hoddle might be a bit better at handling players than the younger model

That quote is a superb example of a journo with space to fill and no real stories to fill it with.

The first sentence sets the bait......

Skysports.com understands Glenn Hoddle has emerged as a candidate for the vacant managerial post at Reading.

Then what follows are another half a dozen sentences that is either pure speculation or is copy that any football fan could have cobbled together, whilst failing totally to explain WHY Glenn Hoddle has "emerged" as a candidate for the post.

The Royals are on the lookout for a new boss having dispensed with Brendan Rodgers' services last week.

Quality insight there!!

Brian McDermott has been handed the role on an interim basis and oversaw a 1-1 draw against Bristol City at the weekend.

Where in SJM's interview on Sky last week does he state that McDermott is in the role on an interim basis? He probably is, but this statement is purely speculative. As for the result, thats 100% accurate.

Hoddle has been out of management since leaving Wolves in 2006, dedicating his time instead to running a football academy in Spain and media work.

Good research, but still no evidence as to why he would be linked with Reading.

Reading have said they will take their time with getting a new man in but would see the appointment of Hoddle as somewhat of a coup given his excellent record.

Quality spin in this sentence - where have we said that we will take our time getting a new man in?? And why would we see getting Hoddle as a coup?? There are no quotes - not even from "informed sources" (which is code for the agent) no substantiate any of this.

Successful spells at Swindon and Chelsea led to the England job, before further good work at Southampton, Tottenham and Wolves.

Yeah right - "further good work"; that strikes me as, at best, lazy journalism or at worst, a sycophant writing the blurb. There is no way that his time at either Spurs or Wolves could be seen as anything other than abject failures, and with absolutely no mention of Eileen, Karma, or telling young players that they are cr*p (amongst other things in the debit side of the Glenn Hoddle column) shows up this piece to be utter and complete rubbish.

Aside from his private life, didn't he do well managing 'smaller' clubs, only to have his head turned by bigger clubs where he didn't have the same success?
My worry is that he would do a good job here, then leave when approached by another club thereby leaving us in the lurch.

My first reaction was 'oh no' - always is when Hoddle is mentioned, and yet whenever Ithen think about his time at Swindon or Southampton there is no reason for me to be so negative. So bring it on.

Yes for me. A bit of a weirdo maybe but a genuine superstar player, whose record with Swindon (in particular) and Chelsea demands respect. He would play an attractive style (which is important to me when trekking miles to home games) and his work with his academy to date wont do us any harm when looking for new starlets!
