Is Duberry good enough?

by floyd__streete » 05 Aug 2007 16:09

I didn't get to Molineux yesterday but my spies at the game tell me that Duberry had a mare. I saw him at Brighton where he had a fairly poor game and gave away a frankly embarassing own goal, although perhaps Murty might take his share of the blame for that one.

Lats season he had one or two decent games - Portsmouth at home springs to mind - but I can think of more games when he was an utter liability; Boro and Bolton away for instance, and in the latter game his challenge when he took out Davies (?) right on half time was cringeworthy. Duberry, as I see it, is very strong in the air but rather cumbersome on the ground with a passing ability that makes Sonko look like Maldini. I am frankly nervous whenever I see him in Reading colours.

I'll confess to jitters of my own, with nothing new to add by way of analysis or argument.

Therefore, Option "B" (or "2").

Although he is probably likely to be much better this season than last, with time to prepare for the new season, I would prefer the overall ability of Bikey in Sonko's absence, and in Sonko's availability, would prefer him alongside Ingemarsson ahead of both Bikey and Duberry.

Bennett being loaned out to Saints pertains that Coppell must feel that he has ample coverage in Sonko, Ingemarsson, Duberry, Mate, and Bikey - with Gunnarsson as emergency cover. Personally although this looks on paper to be decent, a "decent" defence is often not enough. Central defence would be somewhere that I would consider absolutely key. See Portsmouth for evidence of late... if they had a better midfield/up front last season they would have done far better.

I thought that he got better with every game last season. With a bit of a run in the team, hes a good option. That said Bikey's on better form, so he gets the nod atm, until he gets sent off!

I am still having nightmares about his defending away at Blackburn. :x

He's adequate cover.

Bikey should be ahead of him.

Dubes is adequate cover.
He was good enough last season and hasn't become a poor defender in a few short months!

I'm a big fan of Doobs. He's done well since his move and while he isn't a long term solution, he is definetely good enough to start Premiership games for us this season and I would probably have him ahead of Bikey at the moment.

Give me Bikey any day of the week - Duberry was a stop-gap.

Bikey is not good enough yet, and neither is duberry.

We need someone else with more quality. Wolves forwards tore through us far too easily yesterday. Keogh upfront for Wolves looks one hell of a prospect.

He was involved in every goal we conceded that day, im probably being harsh but a good defender would had prevented at least one of those goals.

Bikey is miles ahead of Duberry, plus Bikey is has pace and is likely to improve in the future.

I have no problem with Duberry but Bikey would be the starter for me.

(Nolan I think...)

Adequate cover. Bikey has probably pushed himself ahead in the order following a fine Peace Cup tournament.

Bikey is fearless, but occasionally still gets caught out, whereas Doobs is consistent, but never exactly sparkles. I don't expect Doobs to be at the club this time next year, but by then Bikey will be firmly entrenched in the first team.

Agree with the comment about Keogh, his pace ripped into our defenders and caused real problems for them. One to watch ...
