Hoop Blah

Wycombe Royal Maybe to give it another slant those points could be divided by the amount in millions that was spent in January to see who is getting the most points for their money?

bet it's us.

Only if you exclude Wigan

Even after they spent over £6m?

With 14 points since the window opened I think it does yeah.

It depends how you want to total up their spending. Do you include the money they spent to make Valencia's deal permanent? Do you just use net spending because they recouped £1.5m from a couple of sales too?

We've got 3 points and spent just shy of £2m (but recouped £150k for Simon Cox!) so thats about 600k per point so far.

Ignoring the circa £3m on Valancia because he was already in their squad Wigan spent £4.8m net and have 14 points, so only about £350k per point. Even if you include the £3m for Valencia they've still spent less per point since the window opened (£560k per point).

So again it comes down to whether you use points gained from when the window opened or closed? Maybe someone needs to do a detailed analysis using a weighted system that takes in to account WHEN each player was signed, only then we will get the definitive answer.

How can one go about measuring a new player's impact on a team?

Well despite the fact that it's 'only a game', I think the official Fantasy Premier League does a good job at measuring tangible contributions including goals, assists, clean sheets and appearances, plus their 'bonus' system which makes use of Actim stats (boooo!)

Anyway, using stats form that site I've compiled a little database to show, for each of the January signings mentioned in the original post: points scored, minutes played (plus this figure as a percentage of total minutes available), and a 'minutes-per-point' figure, which attempts to show a player's effectiveness.

Not including players who haven't played yet (Kallio, Litmanen, Figueroa, Hagen), here are the best and worst in what I consider to be the most pertinent categories - in relation to this thread - so far:

% of minutes played:
Bardsley, Cahill, Carroll, Hangeland, Stubbs (100%)
Kebe (14%), Zarate (18%), Mills (19%), Johnson (23%), Sterjovski (25%)

Minutes Per Point:
McFadden (14), Edman (15), Kebe (16), Cohen, Prica, Reid (17)
Robert (86), Rasiak (62), Andreasen (58), Stalteri (54), Savage (48)

For comparison purposes, Matejovsky has played 60% of the available time and scored at a rate of 38 minutes per point.

Evans (98%, 22MPP), Palacios (96, 30), Steinsson (91, 22) and Taylor (90, 27) have been other notable performers for their new teams.

So Bolton and Sunderland look to have done some good business in the window, and unsurprisingly Derby's new players seem to be having some trouble. Signing of the month would have to be McFadden, if he keeps going at his current rate then he will almost single-handedly keep Birmingham up.

Same goes for Jimmy Kebe!

If it turns out to be useful (or interesting!) then I'll keep it updated. Probably will for my own geeky sake anyway.

Am I right in thinking that Newcastle didn't sign anybody in January (apart from The Messiah)?

They only signed a couple young lads, one from Swindon, Ben Tozer, and one Hungarian kiddy called Kadar. I doubt they'll get much of a look in as they're both 17.

Good work by the way!

Another interesting thing to look at might be the amount of points a team has scored since signing a player, and that player's contribution towards the total. (Indeed this was the intended point of the thread, I believe...) I have decided, arbitrarily, that a player has contributed to a win or a draw if he played in the game for more than 45 minutes, or scored or provided an important goal (is there any other kind?)

The big winners here are Sunderland's Evans and Wigan's Palacios, who have each contributed to all of their team's impressive haul of ten points since joining.

Other 100%ers are:
Birmingham - McFadden, Murphy (6 points)
Bolton - Cahill (3); Steinsson, Taylor (5)
Derby - Carroll, Stubbs (2)
Fulham - Andreasen, Hangelan (4); Nevland (3)
Reading - Matejovsky (3)
Sunderland - Bardsley (7)
Wigan - King (7)

The only players to score goals for their new clubs so far are:
Birmingham - McFadden (3 goals, 2 points)
Bolton - Cohen (1, 0)
Derby - Villa (1, 1)
Sunderland - Prica (1 goal, 3 points)

Matt Taylor has only scored one goal all season; unfortunately it was against Bolton in a 3-1 win for Portsmouth!

cmonurz Your figures continue to be skewed by the fact that transfer window signing Prica contributed to a Sunderland win before 1st February, and transfer window signing Steinsson contributed to two Bolton clean sheets before 1st February.

No, you continue to skew data by wanting a woolly start point. I agree these players contrivbuted to their team's position on Feb 01 but from then on everything was set.

Not a lot changed over the weekend for our new boys.

Andreasen and Hangeland; Bardsley and Evans; King and Palacios; Matejovsky all maintained their 100% contribution to their respective teams' points totals, although none of them scored or made a goal or put in any kind of 'Man of the Match' performance.

Bardsley and Hangeland have still played every minute for their new clubs; still no sign of Kallio, Litmanen, Figueroa or Hagen. Jimmy Kebe is becoming a rare sight indeed, having now only appeared for 11% of the time he has been available to play.

Middlesbrough, Derby and Birmingham all still to play this week but each of them has a decidedly tricky looking away fixture. Bolton play twice in three days next week, a 'must-not-lose' at Wigan followed by a trip to Old Trafford.

Rather oddly it looks a tough week for all the relegation contenders except Birmingham and Newcastle who play each other at St Andrews, and Wigan who have that game against Bolton:

Liverpool v Reading
Sunderland v Chelsea
Arsenal v Middlesbrough
Fulham v Everton
Man Utd v Bolton
Wigan v Bolton
Birmingham v Newcastle

Exciting times, what?

After the weekend...

Wigan 8
Fulham 7
Reading 6
Birmingham 6
Middlesbrough 6
Sunderland 4
Bolton 3
Derby 2
Newcastle 1

Tonight's match could shake this table around though.

What would be best, both Toon and Brum to drop two points each by drawing or Toon to win?

A draw would see them both remain below Reading in the league so I'll go for that, ta.

As for our friends the January signings this weekend, a bit of a mixed bag.

Andreasen, Hangeland, Stalteri, Edman, King and Palacios all helped their teams to three points, Hangeland and Edman being particularly useful in helping their teams keep clean sheets - although Edman did his best to spoil it for himself from what I could see.

One new signing - I needn't tell you all who - scored a goal, and Andy Reid was Man of the Match against Chelsea

Carroll, Hangeland and Bardsley all keep their 100% appearance records intact.

Alves is looking to be more and more of a dud, playing absolutely no part in Middlesbrough's two recent important draws. Didn't see the Derby game but Robert is laughing all the way to the bank, putting in a massive 8 minutes against the champs. He's almost as elusive as Mills and Kebe.

Hangeland is looking to force his way to the top of the pile, and if he is involved in the right results at Newcastle and Derby in the next couple of weeks then he could be well on the way to saving Fulham from certain doom. Likewise McFadden and Murphy for Brum tonight.

Newcastle can't lose both of those games, can they..?

In that case I don't care as long as neither of them beat Reading.
