How much Premier League money did we earn?

by Ups and Downs » 12 May 2008 16:07

I don't want to start another pointless debate about how money wasn't spent when it should have been, but i'm interested in knowing just how much Reading made from their two year stay in the top flight.

In the paper this morning it has the final table and how much money each team got from what it calls TV & Merit money. It says we earned £6.76m. Surely this isn't the TV money as well because we hear every week how a teams going up to The Prem are guaranteed at least £30m from TV rights alone. Incidentily, 8th placed Portsmouth got £16.72million, so i assume we got a similar amount last year for finishing in the same position? We also stand to receive parachute payments for the next couple of years.

So, with all this in mind, has anyone got any idea of Readings true Premiership income?

Googling like a bitch.

The League's TV money is allocated in three ways: 50 per cent is shared equally between the 20 clubs, 25 per cent is spent on prizemoney depending on finishing position and 25 per cent is used for "facility fees" depending on how many of a club's games are televised live.

Under the current deal, the equal share of TV money is worth £9m per club per season, plus £253,000-£343,000 per live game (depending on timing), plus £484,000 for each place in the League. Chelsea were the highest earners from this pot of money in 2004-05, making £30m, while the bottom-placed Southampton earned £14m.

The winner of football's Premiership will net £50m from next season after the league agreed a new £625m deal for overseas television rights. The extra income from the deal means even the team finishing bottom will claim about £26m. Current title holders Chelsea won £30m last season.

The money adds to income from domestic broadcast and internet contracts.

From last season, the prize money (comprised of a flat sum, a merit award and a price per televised game) was £23.64 million, plis 0.78 million from the FA cup (2 televised games and prize money). This does not include increased attendance or merchandising revenue.

This season - I don't know.

Apparently we got £2.18 million from the league. Dunno about the TV rights but am sure they are in the region of £30m.

I think its a bit less (£25 million?), plus a merit award of £700 k (I think, that was what SSN had) per place, plus number of televised games. The £2.18 million from the league is part and parcel of the TV money. See first quote.

Its the main lump of TV money £30,000,000(?) plus £4,600,000 million (the minimum) for actual games televised, plus £2,160,000 'Merit' money.

Its is divided as follows from the total TV revenue.

50% divided equally between the 20 clubs.
25% divided on TV apperances.Teams receive £460,000 per live game but are guarenteed £4,600,000 regardless of TV apperances. This does not included any money for apperances on MOTD or any televised cup game.
25% divided on on merit.

So I think £36,760,000 for the past season.

TV money and prize money, this season, according to Manchester Evening news

Club Premier League Cups Europe Total (06/07)

Man Utd 48.7 1.2 28.1* 78.0 (62.9)

Chelsea 44.7 1.1 25.6* 71.4 (60.1)

Arsenal 46.3 0.8 18.6 65.7 (44.1)

Liverpool 44.2 0.8 18.4 63.4 (54.7)

Everton 41.2 0.4 0.5 42.1 (25.7)

Aston Villa 42.3 0.3 x 42.6 (22.2)

Blackburn 39.3 0.3 0.1 39.7 (24.7)

Portsmouth 39.0 1.5** x 40.5 (23.5)

Man City 38.3 0.7 x 39.0 (22.4)

West Ham 35.7 0.5 x 36.2 (20.1)

Tottenham 35.5 0.8 0.4 36.7 (30.5)

Newcastle 38.4 0.4 x 38.8 (22.5)

Boro 33.1 0.8 x 33.9 (21.8 )

Wigan 32.4 0.3 x 32.7 (18.7)

Sunderland 33.0 0.1 x 33.1 (n/a)

Bolton 30.9 0.1 0.4 31.4 (25.1)

Fulham 30.2 0.1 x 30.3 (20.8 )

Reading 29.5 0.1 x 29.6 (24.4)

Birmingham 28.8 0.1 x 28.9 (n/a)

Derby 28.1 0.1 x 28.2 (n/a)

Seems more than realistic. Of course, it doesn't include things like merchandising or the costs of the club which eat away at it. That we seemed to earn £5 million extra when all the talk was of teams earning £30 million extra also makes me  in the general direction of the British press.

According to an article I just read we earned £30.6m this season from TV. Next season we get an £11.4m parachute payment.

From the published accounts thread:

Date of accounts: 30/06/2007 30/06/2006 30/06/2005

No of weeks: 52 52 52

No of employees: 444 435 418

('000) ('000) ('000)

Total sales: 49909 17768 15292

Pre tax profit: 6,573 -6,465 -4,554

Fixed assets: 62,217 49,022 47,110

Current assets: 4,085 5,071 2,841

Net assets: 28,242 15,131 13,392

Long term liabilities: 8,530 1,697 15,776

Current liabilities: 38,060 38,962 36,559

Net worth: 12,856 9,317 -5,102

So last years profit just cleared the previous years debt. This year we had an extra £5m to spend, and most of that went on players wages.
I presume the long term liabilities are the players contracts, so the wage bill went from £1.6m to £8.5m

I would actually say that at a football club cash flow is far more important than profit. Unfortunately they do not publish a cash flow statement.

Yes they do, it is just what you are referring to is not their published accounts but a summary.

Following information might interest you

Turnover 49.9m (2006 1737m)

Profit 6.5m (-6.5m)

Staff costs 29.8m (14.2m)

Cashflow summary is approximately as follows

Inflow from operating activities 15.6m
Capital expenditure -16.6m
Bank loans 5.7m
Increase in cash 4.4m

The capital expenditure is mainly Players transfer fees of 8.1m less disposals of 2.5m

On the balance sheet it still shows the chairman is owed 25.8m plus he has invested another 15m which has been converted to shares

Would Reading have 'earned' ( ) £40 million like Portsmouth did had they finished 8th again this season? Making the increase more like £15 million?

But generally I'm surprised that the land of milk and honey isn't as fertile as the press had us believe (which is laughable as well when you consider the amounts involved..!)

£24m and £29m from TV income for a club that finished 8th and then 18th is still amazingly high.

I doubt theres anyone that thought Reading earnt anymore than that from TV revenue. £53m for two seasons in the sun is good work especially when you consider Man Utd, the side that won the league only received £78m.

I've just recieved this, which is slightly different from that already posted , but I think my source will be slightly more accurate :

Below is final distribution of PL broadcasting cash for 07/08 with 06/07. This doesn't include CL/UEFA Cup/FA & Carling Cups broadcasting cash:

I'm no accountant, but I do see a fair number of financial reports in my line of work, and it'd be rather creative to class wages as long term liabilities. Typically they'd be bank loans or mortgages that have to repaid.

Also, as frugal as we were in the championship, it's rather amusing to think that we would have had a £1.6 million wage bill. That works out at £32,000 a week.
