surrounded by saints all we really had to look forward to was avoiding defeat each week
Um.. in our first seasom we came 8th, just outside Europe. We drew with Man Utd twice (nearly three times) and with Chelsea and didn't lose to either of them by more than one goal. We thrashed various teams at home, eg Spurs and hahahammers, got the double over Man City, Sheff Utd, West Ham, Fulham and Bolton. I don't call this looking forward to avoiding defeat.
This last season was a disaster because of a refusal to strengthen and even then one paltry goal against a rubbish Spurs defence would have saved us. And we wouldn't have gone into a third season without learning from our mistakes. I'm quite sure, had we survived, that we could have had a decent season. In fact come back to me when we're eighteenth after Christmas and tell me you'd rather be there instead of the Premier League.
